Dying Birds and Fish Deaths Becomes Global
Posted by Erin on January 6, 2011 in News, U.S. | 9 Comments

The incidents involving the deaths of birds and fish in Arkansas and Louisiana have become a global phenomenon, affecting wildlife in Europe, South America and New Zealand. Reports continue to stream in of mass deaths all over the globe, increasing the conspiracy theory chatter as limited other reasonable explanations are offered. On Wednesday, more than 40,000 dead velvet swimming crabs have appeared on the Thanet shoreline in England, along with starfish, lobsters, and sponges. Tony Child, Thanet Coast Project manager, told the Star that the same thing happened two and five years ago. He suspects that the cold temperatures are to blame. In Sweden, about 50-100 birds were found dead on a highway on Tuesday. Scientists are not sure what killed the jackdaws yet. One local veterinarian weighed in on the debate. “Our main theory is that the birds were scared away because of the fireworks and landed on the road, but couldn’t fly away from the stress and were hit by a car,” Robert Horst told the Swedish site The Local. He added that they will continue to look into other theories and are performing an autopsy on the birds.

In Brazil, a hundred tons of dead fish have turned up on the coast of Paraná since last Thursday. The fish included sardine, croaker and catfish. “We will wait to see what happened, but speculations suggest that fish may have died due to an environmental imbalance, dropping a fishing boat or leakage of chemicals,” Captain Edson Oliveira Avila, regional coordinator of Civil Defense in the Paraná region, told Paraná-Online.

The Baltimore Sun is reporting that an estimated 2 million fish were found dead in the Chesapeake Bay, mostly adult spot with some juvenile croakers in the mix. Maryland Department of the Environment spokesperson Dawn Stoltzfus says “cold-water stress” is believed to be the culprit. In New Zealand, hundreds of dead snapper washed up on Coromandel Peninsula beaches, many found with their eyes missing, The New Zealand Herald reports. A Department of Conservation official allegedly claims the fish were starving due to weather conditions. That doesn’t really explain the missing eyes, though.
