I spent the day with a good friend at her country club and talked about all of this. Made it home just before the t-storms. I am feeling poorly again - rich food and too much sun - so I will read everything and take to the couch with another alka selzer.

Michelle's trip did a fine job of deflecting attention from Obama in Chicago and the Blago trial, no doubt about that.

When was it that he [bo?] and Lugar got pulled aside because of his passport? How often has he traveled out of the country since then? How many trips have been canceled?

This Lugar? First the Hazel O'Leary nuclear tech dump all over the world , then later Obama's "let's give the muslim world all our tech outreach plan" ...:

c 1996 : (ENERGY SEC HAZEL O'LEARY [OF THE "GIVE THEM ALL NUKES" SET] )... Of particular concern is the fact that Mrs. [HAZEL] O'Leary's glasnost campaign has made public precise information concerning the quantities and whereabouts of U.S. plutonium and highly enriched uranium stocks. At the same time, her Department has significantly reduced the budget available for securing and protecting those sites. The Center for Security Policy has been informed that one reason for these cuts has been the Clinton Administration's diversion of scarce resources from U.S. programs to fund the Cooperative Threat Reduction initiative (frequently called the Nunn-Lugar program).
(4) In this manner, she has effectively invited attacks on these facilities and left them significantly able to thwart such attacks -- with potentially ominous implications for the local communities and/or for the effort to staunch the proliferation of radiological, atomic or thermonuclear weapons. --- "Fiddling While the Nation's Nuclear Weapons Complex 'Burns' Down: O'Leary's Last Denuclearization Shot? ,"Center for Security Policy, Decision Brief No. 96-D 120, 1996-11-29 http://www.centerforsecuritypolicy.org/index.jsp?section=papers&code=96-D_120.

JANUARY 2003 early : () The Cuban-born Mr. [Otto] Reich is a hero to many in the Cuban-American community for his longtime opposition to Cuban dictator Fidel Castro and his unapologetic defense of free markets and conservative causes in the bitter ideological battles that raged across central and South America in the 1980s and 1990s. President Bush was forced to make Mr. Reich a recess appointment to the State Department job after the Democratic-controlled Senate refused to confirm him. The temporary appointment expired late last year and Mr. Reich has been in diplomatic limbo as an underused "special envoy" to Sec. of State Colin L. Powell on Latin American issues.
With a constitutional crisis brewing in Venezuela, a civil war under way in Colombia, a new leftist president taking office in Brazil, and battles over immigration, free trade and economic aid to the region all on the agenda, J. Curtis Struble, a career diplomat who was Mr. Reich's top aide, is serving as acting assistant secretary for the Western Hemisphere.
Congressional and State Department sources indicated yesterday that Roger Noriega, U.S. ambassador to the Organization of American States and a former staffer to retired Sen. Jesse Helms, North Carolina Republican, is Mr. Bush's pick to succeed Mr. Reich. That could set up another confirmation battle, as Mr. Noriega is also seen as ardently anti-Castro. Although Republicans regained control of the Senate in the November elections, incoming Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard G. Lugar, Indiana Republican, has made clear his opposition to Mr. Reich's renomination to the State Department post.
Latin America watchers were divided over the impact of the Reich decision. Frank Calzon, executive director of the Center for a Free Cuba, an anti-Castro human rights group, said that "Havana will be celebrating" at the news. "A foreign government has been able to play a role in who represents this country," he said. "The message to Foreign Service employees is if you are loyal and defend the president's policy, you will be punished." Mr. Calzon said Mr. Powell had failed to use his "considerable talents" to lobby for the Reich nomination, adding, "It is a disgrace that [Mr. Reich] was not allowed to appear before Congress to defend himself."...

And:

2005 : ( LUGAR[R-IN] & OBAMA [D-IL]-------WMD-NUKES)...Lugar ... explained that in 2005, Obama asked if he could join Lugar on a trip to Russia and other countries to visit sites under the Nunn-Lugar program. "After that, we had legislation that we cosponsored together which passed" dealing with dangerous missiles. And:

MAY 27, 2008 : () The George W Bush administration plans to launch an air strike against Iran within the next two months, an informed source tell, echoing other reports that have surfaced in the media in the United States recently.
Two key US senators [Feinstein-D & Lugar-R] briefed on the attack planned to go public with their opposition to the move, according to the source, but their projected New York Times op-ed piece has yet to appear.
The source, a retired US career diplomat and former assistant secretary of state still active in the foreign affairs community, speaking anonymously, said last week that the US plans an air strike against the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). The air strike would target the headquarters of the IRGC's elite Quds force. With an estimated strength of up to 90,000 fighters, the Quds stated mission is to spread Iran's revolution of 1979 throughout the region...-------George W Bush Has Plans For Air Strike On Iran By August

And:

NOVEMBER 2009 : () Marrakech, Morocco, November 3, 2009 ------
In remarks at the Forum for the Future in Marrakech today, Secretary Clinton announced new initiatives to bolster science and technology collaboration with Muslim communities around the world. The Secretary named Dr. Bruce Alberts, Dr. Elias Zerhouni, and Dr. Ahmed Zewail as the first three U.S. Science and Technology Envoys and announced that the State Department will expand positions for environment, science, technology, and health officers at U.S. embassies.
“We want to help Muslim majority communities develop the capacity to meet economic, social and ecological challenges through science, technology, and innovation,” Secretary Clinton said.
The U.S. Science Envoy program is part of President Obama’s “New Beginning” initiative with Muslim communities around the world that he launched in a June 4 speech in Cairo, Egypt. He pledged that the United States would “appoint new science envoys to collaborate on programs that develop new sources of energy, create green jobs, digitize records, clean water, and grow new crops.” The initiative received key support from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Senator Richard Lugar. In the coming months, the first Science Envoys will travel to countries in North Africa, the Middle East, and South and Southeast Asia. ....
