Columbus, Cortez, Pizarro, the whole gang, are fascinating. Must have been a really interesting time in history, what with the new land turning up and the hope of wealth to be had and land to be conquered. Even a bleeding-heart liberal has got to acknowledge what great adventures those were.

Incredible adventures. For their time, it really was akin to exploring a whole new world.

I definitely agree. I was just reading about how Pizarro brought the potato back to Europe and the impact that that had on world history. It’s an amazing time period. I think all history is pretty fascinating. I pretty much never read fiction because I find history so much more interesting, whether it’s ancient Greece or Rome, the Middle Ages, the colonial US, the Westward expansion, WW2. The only stuff that really bogs me down is the 30s-50s. Once the US got to be a giant bureacracy, it got tedious and boring. So many acronyms, so little time.
