Where to Stay in Houston (vanity)
vanity ^ | Dec. 8, 2010 | piytar

Have a business trip to Houston Sunday to Tuesday. Don't know the city well. Any suggestions where to stay downtown? Meeting a client, so it can't be a rat trap, but we're on a budget - no 5 star hotels. Thanks!

Use Priceline! They have a new feature where you can center your search on landmarks or street addresses. You could center your search on your client’s address.

The downtown Hilton (pretty sure its a Hilton) near the Toyota Center (where the Rockets “play”) is nice. Not sure about the cost though ... might be out of your price range. There’s also a Four Seasons on the south side of downtown that’s supposedly nice as well — but, again, I don’t know the cost.

I live here, so I’ve seen these places, but never needed to stay there.

What part of downtown? On the west near the Allen center are the Doubletree, the Hyatt, and the Crown Plaza.

Anything on Westheimer should be good, great part of Houston to stay in with the best restaurants.

I second the Drury vote. It may have the added advantage of being out of range of the Mayor White inspired sports stadium funding taxes on hotels and rental cars.

Zaza isn’t downtown, it’s in the museum district.
He wants to stay downtown.

I have stayed at many different hotels in Houston and found The Four Seasons to be the finest.
They aren’t the cheapest, but the quality is the best, the service ditto, the location excellent downtown.
I usually stay on the 2 for 1 special which is on the weekends,
I don’t know if it is available during the week, but check it out.
If that is too high, check out the reviews of hotels on Hotels.com

My number one son lives in Houston, near downtown. Before he moved, he stayed in the Marriott, found it nice and conveniently located but I don’t know how expensive.
Join the Marriott frequent stayer points club and maybe it’ll pay you back later.

Thanks, all! Guess I’ll be checking out the Drury, the Four Seasons, and the Marriott mention above.

On Hotwire, you can get an (unnamed) 4-star downtown hotel for $79/night, 4.5-star for $96/night.

I’ve never been disappointed by Hotwire’s ratings.

Is the WhiteHall still in business downtown? I physically bumped into Bonnie Prince Charlie there in November of 1977.

I would have suggestd the Four Seasons, but you said no 5 star hotels. The Four Seasons is down on Lamar and Austin, near the Convention Center. It's adjacent to a small mall. It's a wonderful hotel, the best one I ever got the flu at on a business trip. Spent the whole week in bed and got better just in time for my flight home.

I travel quite a bit for my job, mainly to Chicago and the Chicago suburbs.

I've found that using the name your price feature on Priceline.com gets me the best rates. I typically pay $50 per night in the Chicago suburbs and $90 per night downtown and I only stay in hotels that are 3+ stars, which on Priceline means Hyatt's, Hiltons, etc.

As an example, a room I saw on Hotels.com for $119 I got through Priceline for $50.
