A vicious snow storm descended on Lake Tahoe ski resorts on Friday. Snow was dumping at incredible rates, winds were as high as 70 mph, shutting down the freeways for a time and also many of Tahoe’s ski resorts, where skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts were forced to end their day early.
But the good news waking up on Saturday morning is the freeways are open, resorts are running their lifts again, the sun was shining, and over two feet of fresh snow has accumulated over the past 24 hours.
Boreal Mountain resort reported the biggest snowfall on Friday with three feet of fresh powder, while Alpine Meadows had 2½ feet of new snow.
“The snowfall totals are incredibly impressive,” said Kent Hoopingarner, general manager for Alpine Meadows and Homewood.

I am partial to Northstar...I wish I wan’t doing taxes now, I would be up there with my son.
I used up this year’s ski budget at Park City and Deer Valley, Utah in January.
I remember when a spring snow leaving 3' was a good thing.
I haven’t been to Northstar. But I hear good things about it. I’ve been to Mt. Rose and Diamond Pk in Nevada, and Heavenly and Alpine in CA, in addition to the ones I mentioned in my earlier post.
No shame in that, whatsoever. I’ve skied all the Park City areas and very much enjoyed them all in years past.
It’s a great thing. More snow means more water for agriculture this spring and summer.
And longer seasons of spring skiing generating tourist $$
Try as we might, we could see nothing which would identify this area. All I know is we didn't pass Robert Redford on the highway.
It’s a “vicious storm” to the Drought Police....jeopardizes their livelihood.
Hmm...anyone heard if they got buried in Carson City?
Friend of mine has been offline for a day or so, this would certainly explain it.
We came out of SLC airport, a short ride east on 80 then to Rt.40 into the Wasatch. So I have not seen that part of Rt. 80 that comes in from the east before it hits 40.
If I wasn’t an ocean lover I’d abandon Jersey for UT in a heartbeat (if Mrs. JimRed let me get away with it, that is)!
Don’t forget Sugar Bowl..it has lots of runs and when other resorts have little snow they seem to have runs going...we skied lots of places listed here and Sugar Bowl, Northstar and Heavenly were my favs.
Should add, foothills above Carson City got much more.

Sounds wonderful! Three feet of new snow—oh, I wish I were there. Of course, that snow is nowhere near as light and dry as Rocky Mountain powder, but it would still be glorious to ski through/in/on.
The nice part about Northstar is that the main peak is quite a bit lower than Squaw and it right behind Squaw. That means on high wind days when the upper lifts at Squaw are closed, Northstar is still bearable.
I've also found that these storms produce a lot of snow, but at Squaw the top of the hill gets really wind blown by the time the slope opens up again. Not much powder left over.
