It’s Time to Allow NPR to Come Out of the Closet — at Long Last
Somewhat Reasonable (The Heartland Institute) ^ | March 12, 2011 | Jim Lakely

The right's long-justified annoyance at taxpayer-subsidized National Public Radio's elitist and insulting liberal bias — accidentally expressed by one sacked executive named Schiller, and quite viciously by another sacked executive named Schiller — has finally gained traction among the greater culture.  Heads are rolling at the DC offices of NPR. I never thought I'd see it, and I can't say I'm not kinda enjoying it.

NPR's chief fundraiser Ronald Schiller not only saw his planned smooth departure from his NPR gig accelerated, he lost his "fall back" at the Aspen Institute, too. His job-killing crime? Dragging his insults of the folks in "fly-over country" — racists, not-really-Christian, just generally being a jerk on tape — behind him like a palpably moist stink-cloud.

Defund NPR, PBS and CPB now!

In fact, the only alphabet agencies that the government should run are the CIA, FBI and the USPS (since it's mandated by the Constitution). America's prosperity will return when the Washington, DC unemployment rate is north of 80%.

Yer link's busted (the main one at the top, not the one at the bottom of your excerpt):
You 404’d it. Gnarly, dude.

Surfin’ ain’t easy, and right now, you’re lost at sea.
But don’t worry; simply pick an option from the list below,
and you’ll be back out riding the waves of the Internet in no time.

    * Hit the “back” button on your browser. It’s perfect for situations like this!
    * Head on over to the home page.
    * Punt.
Might be a problem with how FR interprets it through the redirector; I dunno.

Meanwhile, why excerpt it? It's just a blog.

"Out of the closet"? You mean, along with all their other flaws, NPR is gay too???

I’d like more details on the link problem ... though I will now investigate.

Grrrr. Didn't work for me, either. Bummer.

Try this link.

I hope it's not because I used a long dash in my headline.

It appears to me that the destination page URL has a non-ASCII character in it, most likely it's the "dash" before "at Long Last". The non-ASCII character bollixes up the redirect.

http://www.freerepublic.com/%5Ehttp://blog.heartland.org/2011/03/its-time-to-allow-npr-to-come-out-of-the-closet-%E2%80%94%C2%A0at-long-last/

The lower link under your excerpt is not redirected, it's just a plain URL, so no interpretation, so it works as intended.

Unfortunately, that appears to be exactly why. :(

You forgot the millions spent each year on the VOA including the Arab TV network nobody watches. Unfortunately, some conservatives (who like foreign propganda) have a blindspot on this.

BTW, the USPS is not “mandated” by the Constitution which merely says that the Congress should have the power, should it wish to exercise it, to build and maintain post roads.

NPR was barely in the closet to begin with & they were outed by sleuth reporting.

The same kind of "sleuth reporting" that made 60 Minutes famous. Yet the left calls the new "sleuth" wrong.

Interesting.

BTW, the USPS is not “mandated” by the Constitution which merely says that the Congress should have the power, should it wish to exercise it, to build and maintain post roads.

Article I Section 8 does state that "The Congress shall have Power...To establish Post Offices and Post Roads;"

Although the term "Post Offices" is cited in that section, I prefer your interpretation, which I believe is in harmony with the framer's intent. I certainly regret that I used the term "mandated" since I think it carried more weight than the phrase "shall have power".

I also think that the establishment of post offices does not preclude the government from outsourcing those duties to private enterprise.

By the way, I totally agree with you about the uselessness of VOA. Many decades ago, I took a tour of its overly lavish headquarters (then in the HEW Building as I recall). Even in the cold war era, there was enormous waste clearly evident in the facilities and the excessive staffing. Any agency that's proud of Communist apologist Edward R. Morrow as its onetime director needs to be abolished.

This the wrong solution. The airwaves belong to the public. All those TV and radio frequencies should be pulled. The left side of radio band should “emancipated” from the yoke on FM government-public radio, that is, “In the United States, the twenty channels with center frequencies of 88.1–91.9 MHz (channels 201–220) constitute the reserved band, exclusively for non-commercial and educational (NCE) stations.”
Devise a fair system of allocating the once-government frequencies, for instance, Clear Channel Communications can have one more radio station in America. George Soros can have one more station.
Those people who fund NPR and CPB can have one radio or television station, pick one. Fund a small government office to make sure new owners aren’t “beards” for corporations. Education institutions would be encouraged to use digital radio channels, for profit.
In other words, ban government broadcasting. If the government has built a popular show, it should be auctioned to the winning bidder who pays off other stockholders. All government buildings, towers and other assets to be auctioned, preferably to the lottery winners of frequencies.
No more government “news.”
