Diogenese -- who was looking for an honest man and the foremost Cynic of his time -- once was taken as a slave by a pirate. The pirate, wanting to sell Diongenese for some cash, needed to know Diogenese' trade. When asked, Diognese replied, "I am a governor. Sell me to a person who needs a master."

PS -- I am assuming that if you publish these trivai bits and attribute them to the FR while making a profit, you will make a donation of some small sort to Jim Robinson. God Bless him and you!

Meteor crater, near Winslow Arizona, was for years believed to be a remnant of a volcano. Daniel Barringer, a mining engineer and businessman, thought otherwise. He believed the crater was caused by an the impact of an iron meteorite with the Earth. In the early 1900s, he purchased the crater and its surrounding land, with the hopes of becoming rich by finding and selling the iron meteor he believe would be there.

Many scientists scoffed at him since the prevailing science claimed his purchase was nothing more that an obsolete lava hole. In 1960 Eugene M. Shoemaker confirmed the crater was formed in fact the result of a collision of the Earth and a meteor, restoring the reputation of Barringer. By then Barringer had long been dead and bankrupt. Even though he was right, the meteorite that Barringer just knew would be in the ground had vaporized upon impact. There was virtually no iron in the area.

“A handful of sand contains about 10,000 grains; more than the total number of stars we can see with the naked eye on a clear night... but the total number of stars in the Universe is larger than all the grains of sand on all the beaches on planet Earth.” —Carl Sagan

About 5,000 times as many in fact.
