The Coupon Whisperer: "Extreme Couponing"---Episodes 1 & 2
The Coupon Whisperer ^ | April 6, 2011 | PJ-Comix

The first two episodes of "Extreme Couponing" aired this evening on TLC. Many similarities with the original show which aired in December although I noticed some new bits of interesting information. Specifically "money maker" deals or "making money" was alluded to. For those of you new to couponing that means when you have a coupon so good that it is worth more than the product you are buying. The amount of "overage" aka "moneymaker" aka "mm" is applied toward your other products. That is why you saw the people on today's show able to buy meat, milk, etc. and end up owing hardly anything.

One criticism I do have of the show is that for dramatic purposes the people bought HUGE amounts of items on each shopping trip. The Coupon Whisperer prefers not to do that for two reasons:

“Extreme Couponing” — isn’t that an oxymoron?

And then lastly, like you stated, very few real “useable” information/tips were given out in these shows.

The show did take quick note of the mm in a couple of deals but only briefly. Hopefully more detail on later shows. Also would like to see some couponeer/manager conflicts which DO happen.

The true beauty of couponing is represented in the breakfast I am about to cook up. Instead of stockpiling knicknacks that I won't finish using for years into the future (like mustard), I am about to enjoy steak and eggs breakfast. Both FREE. Even the Lea & Perrins Worcester sauce is free. I got those just after I drove into a Winn Dixie supermarket last July just as Rush Limbaugh began reading an article I wrote and mentioned my name three times on national radio. Buying the FREE Worcester sauce was sort of anticlimactic after that.

p.s. Among future projects for The Coupon Whisperer is cheap travel obtained via couponing. Already got a good tip yesterday in that regard.

This is interesting about the mustard lady:

http://jillcataldo.com/node/16170

The woman may as well be a shoplifter. She also had all the manu codes on her shopping list. Someone on SD did a screenshot of it.

I’m a big believer that every couponer should know how to read coupon barcodes. It puts the couponer in control of what happens at the register, by being able to point out what coupons will beep and why. But using the info to fraudulently obtain items is way over the line. This is why all of the Goody Two Shoes coupon sites are so annoying about censoring this information.

OMG!!! You know, I THOUGHT she looked familiar! I hang out at SD and remember that she caused quite a stir! What she was doing in her videos that were filmed at Target was blatantly illegal coupon usage. I can’t believe that was her last night....that she has the nerve! I am amazed that she wasn’t arrested by Target after they became aware of what she was doing.

The wasy she was using coupons makes it difficult for those of us who use coupons the proper way.

Yeah, she’s really a piece of work. On SD, they’re uncovering a bunch of suspect things she did on the show as well. Apparently, she used FiberOne coupons to buy Cheerios and Kix among other things.

Everything about that woman represents all that is rotten in the couponing world. People like her make it way harder for us to make honest deals.

She should be handcuffed and her mustard should be redistributed amongst the good couponers of the world! Couponers of the world unite!!

I watched both shows. My first reaction was envy at the liberal coupon policies that apparently exist elsewhere in the country. For instance one gal did 18 separate transactions in order to get $10 off every $50 she spent. I dont know of any store in my area that would allow that.

We often shop at Bloom. It has a coupon limit of 20/day. We had a Shoppers Food Warehouse for a while (now closed); you could not use more than four of the same coupon in one trip. The idea of cash back if a coupon doubles for more than a product is priced is totally foreign to me. All the stores in our part of Virginia will allow not allow deduction of more than the product price due to coupons. Nor take more than one coupon per item.

My second reaction was concern that the show will cause merchants to tighten their policies further so that the kind of tactics being devised to circumvent coupon limits won’t fly. It would take a computer programmer a few minutes to program the system so that you cant use your store “VIP” customer card more than once every 24 hours.

What is REALLY scary and of great concern is that she is actually teaching unsuspecting people how to coupon. That should be a crime. People like her are the ones that make stores leery of coupon users and it makes it that much harder for honest people to use coupons. Given today’s economy, I couldn’t imagine shopping without coupons, so this is of great concern.
