I was thinking what kind of round could blow his head off like that.....would they use that in close quarters?

Absolutely!........At close quarters, it is moving out at about 2800 fps and they would use a lighter bullet in a hollow point. Like a 130 grain flat base HP.
It would vaporize itself and anything it comes into contact with.
