Need Help in Becoming a Christian
Me

Posted on 07/17/2011 11:09:48 AM PDT by cubsbearsnorthwestern

Okay I am already a Christian as far as believing in Jesus and that he is the son of God.

But I've never really been a church goer, raised Catholic but I have some problems with the religion and want to convert to basic christianity.

I don't know where to start as far as finding a church or local group.

Any help?

Join the Religion forum. You’ll have no trouble identifying the one true church. :-)

Just kidding. But pray and study, and you’ll do fine.

I am a Christian, and want you to know God loves you, and He has made possible the way to know Him.

I strongly recommend the website of Galyn Wiemers, a Bible teacher in Iowa. He’s very down to earth in his audio/video messages.

Secondly, I would suggest you start praying on a daily basis and you will very soon find a real contact between you and our Lord.

Good luck, FRiend.

Post two is the best advice for you. Pray about it and let the Holy Spirit guide you. He is a little bit more into what God wants for you and where your path will lead you than anyone here. I've always believed that in the most remote area on earth, if there was a person who really was looking for the Lord and direction in life, the Holy Spirit would some how, some way , get the right person or circumstance to that person for guidance.

Looking for the bare minumum, eh? It really doesn't matter then. I suppose you could be a Unitarian or something. If you're interested in acually getting something out of what you're looking for, I suggest you set higher standards than "basic Christianity".

Begin touring churches in your area. You will find it fun and educational. Find one that stays with the bible and preaches salvation and the gospel.

Stay away from the social justice churches asa they have become communist welfare cults.

Going to church is critical in being fed the word of the Lord as well as meeting fellow Christians and following the Holy Spirit. Email me if you need any help.

Pray for America

Christianity was always meant to be a personal walk with God. Aside from the basics, there is no right path to follow.

Read the bible, both the new and old testaments.

Perhaps you misunderstood him. I think he was mostly referring to a non-denominational approach. I don’t think that necessarily equates to setting low standards.

If I was in your shoes, I’d look for a church that is somewhat nearby, and I would look specifically for a church that says clearly in it’s “Statement of Faith” or “Mission Statement” or “Doctrine” that it believes that the Bible is the infallible Word of God. It doesn’t matter what creed it adheres to, just as long as the people there believe that the Word of God is true.

And, I would also encourage you to pray that God would lead you to the right fellowship of believers. He will. He definitely wants you to be in fellowship with those who believe in Him and can encourage you.

God bless you on your journey!

"I am a Christian, and want you to know God loves you, and He has made possible the way to know Him."

How do you deal with Psalms 5:5, Proverbs 5:16-19; Matthew 7:23; 25:41? Ignore them? Change the language? Or are you merely talking about the god of the American Religion who doesn't share an identity with the revealed God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob?

“basic Christianity”?

There is no such thing. Follow Christ’s command to St. Peter: “Feed My Flocks, Feed My lambs.” This was a task entrusted to the early apostles and the Church He founded when He entrusted to St. Peter the keys to the kingdom of Heaven. Stay where you are and learn more about the Catholic Church. Check up the apparitions in Lourdes and Fatima.

yes- read through Luke and then Acts to see what the first Christians did to become Christians- at the beginning, before the following centuries which would see the rise of the Roman Catholic church which adopted the structure and trappings of the Roman government and added offices and teachings of men throughout its history; before the Reformation, which saw the creation of Protestant churches with their central councils and synods and doctrines and creeds. Go to the scriptures for the church that Christ and his apostles started, before the centuries of man-made doctrines and practices and confusions and controversies and wars- His Church. There are still groups that work and worship and organize that way. I can tell you where if you’d like.

The simplest way is to just start. Find local churches and attend worship, talk to the pastor, maybe a member or two, google up the various denominations to see what they believe (or say they believe.) If you have a churchgoing friend, ask about his/her church, maybe go with them on Sunday.

Some will turn you off, or leave you unmoved, but others will be warm and welcoming. Christians are meant to worship and share fellowship as a community, not be lone wolfs, so finding a church home is a priority.
