Seriously, I have been interested in the possibility of alien civilizations contacting us ever since I started reading science fiction in my early teens.

30 years ago, serious scientists thought this was a serious possibility. Today the thinking seems to have shifted. There may be alien civilizations out there some where, but they are probably extremely rare. We may be the only civilization in our galaxy.

Also, it may be that it is impossible to travel faster than light. That is what Einstein said. Since then there have been some other theories, but faster than light travel is really a device for science fiction and it very well may be impossible. The nearest star is only 4 light years away, but the nearest civilization may be many thousands of light years away, or if it is in another galaxy, millions of light years away.

I would bet big money at long odds that there is no alien contact in my life time.
