The headlines last week were filled with outrage over the revelation that former Philadelphia School Superintendent Arlene Ackerman has filed for $573 a week in unemployment compensation, the maximum amount in Pennsylvania.

Ms. Ackerman, who was contracted to receive a $348,000 salary through 2014, was bought out of it for a $905,000 lump-sum payment plus $83,000 for unused vacation and personal days.

Meh.

She can file, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to get paid. If the UI regulations are the same as the UI regulations in my state, the contractual buyout will probably serve to zero out her WBA. (Weekly benefit amount.)

Lol, but who knows, we live in Bizarro World these days, so I suppose anything is possible.

I suspect Pa. is a bit looser than N.M although I wouldn't swear to anything, & while I'm not sure she will get it I wouldn't bet a lot against it.

But the point is that Ms-I'm-A-Public-Servant-Just-Doing-It-For-The-Children went ahead and filed despite being a newly minted millionaire.

I think a lot of eyes are getting open.

Money’s money, and that ain’t funny.

Don’t like it ?

Paid for the unemployment insurance (yes, please remind me, Capt. Obvious, that it's her employer who did) gets it back.

Sometimes insurance is insurance, said Sigmund Freud.

True that!

I work for the state agency in NM that administers UI benefits. I remember about this time last year, all the political appointees who were about to lose their jobs (due to Susanna Martinez winning the gubernatorial election) were huddled in the General Counsel’s office running a strategy session to try and figure out how they could qualify for unemployment.

A bunch of pigs trying to figure out how they could take one last turn at the trough. (Although the General Counsel himself was one of the more honorable public servants I’ve come across, and I don’t lump him in with the rest of the piggies)

Heh, either ways, I could go on about UI all day :P
