Remember, Sam Houston went there during the Civil War. He opposed that war and was not very popular in Texas at the time.

Are you sure? He was a Unionist and opposed the War, but he lived in Texas at the time and died there in 1863. He had lived in Indian Territory, Oklahoma, back in 1829.
