The mayor and city council of Austin, Texas have pledged to make the city coal-free. This is an incredible step toward sustainability in a very coal-heavy state.
Please send a note to Austin's mayor, telling him you support his no coal pledge.
Mayor Leffingwell recently pledged to phase out Austin's dirty Fayette coal plant and begin moving the city toward a clean energy future. Shortly thereafter, the entire city council joined the pledge, setting a huge precedent for cities all over the country.
In the coming months, we'll need to convince Austin Energy to support Mayor Leffingwell's pledge. It is really important that we all speak out in support of his pledge, no matter what state we live in.
Take a moment to send a note to Mayor Leffingwell, letting him know that you stand with him.

Austin is the San Francisco of Texas. Everybody should quit driving cars and riding busses and take their bikes everywhere. Unplug the TV, Laptop, Cell Phones and go without air conditioning in the middle of a 99 degree summer with 90 percent humidity. Then these Liberal turds would know to respect Fossil Fuels-based energy. What a stupid Mayor.
Magic, probably. He’s one of the worst mayors we’ve had in recent years, and is about to ban not only plastic grocery bags, but paper ones, too. A veritable jackass all around.
I think we should support the mayor’s initiative. More resources for the rest of us and let them wallow in their stupidity.

Austin Energy is about to raise the rates for electricity too, probably in part because of phasing out coal plants and replacing them with unreliable wind turbines. I see more rolling brownouts ahead like Austin had last winter.
On top of that, they propose to charge people with big houses more per kilowatt than those with small houses.
I think it’s Mayor Like-effing-hell.
Like-effing-hell he’s going to power the city without coal.
Jobs in the standby generator installation and maintenance field, until they outlaw those also.
So how will they be able to charge up all their Priuses?

The only good thing about Austin is that the complete collection of dull knives are in one location.
This will be an economic boom for cities throughout Central Texas - when businesses flee Austin in search of electricity.

The redesign of rates is needed to provide sufficient revenues, to achieve greater rate equity between customer classes and to better support strategic goals for energy efficiency and on-site energy resources such as rooftop solar.

Used to live over in the Red River Valley and knew Twin City politics much better than I do now.
‘Course back then, before Coleman folded up camp and limped home without a fight, it wasn’t the constant nauseating assault on the sensibilities it is now: Frankin, Ellison, Klobuchar and, as you say, Ryback. Oh my god and Mark Dayton again now too.
I have a boyhood pal who is a doctor there and is the type to blind himself to all evidence and declaim about how “stupid” Michele Bachmann is while defending Obama & Ellison and them as “trying to do the right thing.”
When I lived nearby I did spend a lot of pleasant hours listening to Sooch and his good sense observations. My favorite was firing up every gasoline-powered cylinder he owned (from generator and lawn mower to the cars, snowmobile and Harley etc. etc.) at the appointed hour on Earth Day. All the flashers going, honking the horn, the works.
That and also the days when he would go through the gubmint pages of the phone book and call up the many bizarre Minnesota state agency listings and ask them what the hell they did on the taxpayer dime—ha!

True enough. The City of Austin LOVES to dictate to everyone else how to live their lives. The laws and mandates they institute are often designed to ripoff the taxpayers to fund nonsense and more nonsense.
And that is exactly what the Panhandle is gonna look like come sunrise tomorrow. Getting a wee bit of snow this PM.......;o)

Fine with me, I’m all for people making more of their own decisions locally rather than being told what to do by the EPA or other Fed agency.
I’d be interested in seeing what energy source they are going to transition to.
I have many fond memories of listening to Sooch with my dad. He used to call Joe to tell him his stories about the first Sturgis bike rallies. What a hoot. I'd think he'd gone in the house to use the facilities, then I'd hear him talking to Joe on the radio we had on outside on the patio. He'd call him on our bedroom phone unbeknown to us.
Lost my dad last December to brain cancer. It's fun to remember his calls. Yes. We have our fair share of idiots in this state. I'm a native South Dakotan, but I've lived here longer than I lived there. When it comes to politics in Minnesota, I just mainly shake my head.

Austin is the anus of Texas.
Wind power does not function well in very cold or heavy rain conditions [See: Link]. That is a serious problem, IMO, and could lead to occasional blackouts when we need power most. I would much rather have generating capacity we could rely on under extreme weather conditions.
The Climate Protection Plan appears to consider anthropogenic global warming to be a serious problem and that greenhouse gas emissions consequently must be reduced. You would hope the planners and the politicians would be smarter than that.
The only note I will send him is to tell him what a stupid communistic SOB he is.
Just as soon as they get all those nasty little plastic (and paper) bags banned.
The “eco” bags they sell in the grocery stores don’t look like they can be laundered. It seems to me that bacteria’s going to flourish in them from spills, leaks and drips and someone’s going to get sick when they eat something out of one that’s previously carried leaky chicken or something.
Use something that can be washed out or laundered.
These freaks are slowly returning us to the dark ages.
Back in the late ‘80s, Austin made a concerted push to become the Silicon Valley of the South. Since then, a lot of computer-related businesses have moved there. It was a left-leaning place before that, but now it is uber-left.
The California attitude has instilled itself there: Nevermind how much it costs. If it’s aligned with lefty goals, it’s worth it. Don’t worry about debt. That will take care of itself.
Actually, we are planning to power Austin with rainbows and unicorns. That’s why we have to get rid of both paper and plastic bags at all the stores, because everyone knows that the natural enemies of rainbows and unicorns are environmentally-unsound packaging for your groceries.
