First thing that came up in my mind.

I was thinking the same thing. At least it wasn’t a Coke bottle.

and is made out of a "sophisticated" alloy that is not unknown to modern science Note the bold highlighting of the word "unknown" - which is preceded by the word "not" for dramatic, sensational and confusing effect. In other words, the alloy is known.
Real question is - what IS the alloy? It's certainly not out of the question that a "hollow" ball of this size and weight could fall intact from a satellite of some sort with a decaying orbit. Titanium or some sort of titanium alloy jump to mind, since titanium has an extremely high strength to weight ratio (i.e., it's a strong light metal).

This thing would be a little less than a foot in diameter. Must be very tiny aliens inside.

How do they know that it came from space?
How could it crash through the atmosphere without burning up
or show severe stress?
I will believe in ET when, and only when, he/she/it contacts us, or we contact it.

What do you think is going to eventually happen if we keep launching space-age metals into orbit?
