I don't think it is an exaggeration to say that no one here wants to see Mitt Romney win the GOP nomination. But voluntarily helping out a person in need (especially one that you know) is not something to be mocked. Liberals do that instinctively because they abhor volunteerism and private charity, in favor of involuntary taxation and government dependency.

But the episode also demonstrates Mitt's poor judgment - one does such things privately, or at the very least, without calling undue attention to one's self.

This doesn't sound staged to you? The woman claims not to have enough money to pay her electricity bill, but she has the money to waste on gas driving around on the highway and following Mitten's bus?
