Buoyed by his strong debate performance in Myrtle Beach, Newt Gingrich has called his rivals to drop out of the race because "consolidating into a Gingrich candidacy" would "virtually guarantee victory" in the South Carolina primary and stop Mitt Romney becoming the Republican nominee.

Making the case to a crowd of almost 200 in an art gallery in the old railroad junction town of Florence, South Carolina he said: "If you look at the polling, I’m the only conservative who realistically has a chance to be the nominee.

Okay, then. Santorum, Ron Paul and Newt should drop out.

We’ll have a conservative candidate.

Just wait.

"Santorum voted against right to work in Pennsylvania and stupidly wasted time in the debate argueing with Romney over felon voting rights.."

It was fun to see Mitt so cluelessly stumble into the trap, but more importantly it shows what kind of effort Santorum thinks is worthy. I can just see him plotting away, crafting his silly little trap. Then sitting there with his smarmy smirk as blockhead Mitt stutters and stumbles in.

Umm PA law would have to change FIRST for that vote you’re talking about to be taken seriously...... Last I checked Santorum wasn’t a STATE senator.

Oh, come on. that’s an old argument and never meant anything.

Everyone in Texas was democrat back in the day. Conservative but democrat.

Reagan was democrat if you want to go that stupid route.

Perry was always conservative and when the dem party went liberal, he became a Republican. Everyone knows this.

Santorum is more than willing to defend his votes and admit where he thinks he made a mistake. That's a good quality.

Romney is a s conservative on 'family issues' as Santorum?? Not even close.

As for Perry, I have no problems with him personally, but I think it's clear from everything that's happened that he's not going to be the Republican party's pick for running against Obama.

It is what it is.

I think he should make the decision to drop out and send his support to one of the other two conservatives left in the race.

Perry the Democrat was trying to get Al Gore elected as President by working for him in Texas.

Lordie, that has been debunked SOOOOOOOOOO many times I’m incredulous that this old DNC talking point is still around. What next? Perry was forcibly tying little girls to tables and injecting them with Gardisil himself?

“Negative ads” got the best of Newt??? HA! More likely to do with the fact he was a bigtime RINO sell-out after leaving congress. We’ve already got one flip-flop, so there’s no reason for Newt to be in the race except to sell books.

His 'doing well' in NH is meaningless.

It is meaningless to you. He also did well in Iowa.

He's a liberal libertarian, and should not be running as a Republican. He never has been one, and he never will be one. The ignorance of some of the voters doesn't change a thing.

Saying something doesn't make it so. Ron Paul has served in Congress as a Rep and run as a Rep. His constituents must think he is a Rep. The only exception was Paul's run for the Presidency in 1988 as a Libertarian. I would rather he stay in the primaries this time and eschew running as a third party candidate, which would hurt Reps more than Dems.

He couldn’t even win Pennsylvania back in 2008. He wasn’t just beaten in fact, he was severely beaten. What makes you think he’ll do so much better in 2012? against Barack Obama no less?

It should really be Santorum urging Newt to drop out.

I can’t believe you’re joining the ‘drop out and let me win’ crowd.

This thing has barely started.

Keep those blinders firmly in place. You’ll need them when Newt’s thin veneer starts to wear off.

What makes you think Newt would do better given his perceived lack of ethics and being forced to step down as Speaker? Or the fact that Newt never won a statewide office and has favorability ratings in the toilet compared to Santorum?

You’re obviously the one who can’t read the writing on the wall even when it’s written on your own wall.

No doubt about that, but Santorum has more class in his pinky finger than Newt could muster in a room full of his most devoted sheep.

It is meaningless to you.

Actually, it IS meaningless. When your votes are mostly from Democrats and Independents (i.e. liberals), then your coming in 3rd is meaningless.

Ron Paul has only run as a Republican because he could win that way. He's never been a Republican. He's just used the Republican party to gain power and attention.

I do agree with the probability that his staying in the race is better for the country, because if he runs 3rd party Obama is a shoe in to win another four destructive years.

In addition, Paul isn't splitting the conservative vote because it isn't conservatives who are supporting him. It's some other entity which defies explanation.......but it's certainly not conservative.

I was kinda joking when I cited Romney as conservative on family values, but he could make the case. One wife, nice kids, but ... wait, dog on top of the car.

I just don’t think Santorum has it. He admits to mistakes. Excellent. A full time job with him though.

If you don’t like Newt you should want Perry to stay in. A lot of people will never vote for Santorum.

There’s just something about him that doesn’t attract people and charisma means a lot in elections, although maybe it shouldn’t.

I’m for nobody whining for others to get out. Gingrich did it, Santorum did it. Ron Paul and Romney and Perry have not done it.

Man up, people. Run your race. Extol your own virtues and win or lose. don’t beg to be the default candidate.

Newt should drop out so he can clear the way for Perry. See? It works the same way for a has-been hack like Newt too.

I haven't. Read my other posts. I think Newt's way out of line for calling for the other candidates to drop out. (Just like I said Ron Paul was a few weeks back).

I just stated a personal thought about Perry's prospects for winning the nomination, and what might be best for the overall process.
