BTW, the term was well established in the 'survivalist' circles back as far as the '60s, so don't try to snow this old timer.

Don't try to snow this old-timer, my books and magazines on survival and survivalism go back into the 1960s, and iI don't recall them using any cussing at all, and they sure weren't making it the common nomenclature.

As an ex-jock, army veteran and contractor, and almost lifetime survivalist, I am well aware of cussing, but I don't want to join the movement to make it our official daily language in our public life and writings.

When did conservatives start pushing to name movements and themselves to mainstream the word shit into our daily culture?

As my Grandfather, a WWII US Navy Captain used to say:
"Language is a tool used to encode a message and get it across. The words used reflect the severity and importance of what is being said. If you're hung up on the language used, you're missing the meaning."

Alternatively, when people objected to his use of certain terms and invited him to use other words to express himself, he would say this:
"In this instance, the term used is the only appropriate term."

I dare say the man was more conservative than any you will ever find anywhere.

I understand your point ansel12 but, quite frankly, you would have a lot more credibility with your side of the discussion if you would stop spelling the word out on this FAMILY forum.

Look at post one, defenders of promoting that, disseminating that, and turning it into the public language of our movement, even it's very name, are being a little overly cute to seem shocked when I used it to make a point and show it's ugliness.

Print out post one, and give it to the kids, they need that valuable information, and keeping it on a computer isn't effective in most emergency situations.

My neighbors think we’re big meanies which is fine by me because I think they’re clueless little idiot metrosexuals imported from lala land. It’s going to take a huge dose of SHTF for my opinion to change. It used to not be like this but times have changed with the old salt of the earth folks dying off and being replaced with this new crop of ninnies.

Still, I’m staying put. Decent climate. Water. Wildlife and fish. Rural area.

“LOL, your grandfather has used it in private conversation?”

No, my grandfather used it where ever and when ever he wanted to and didn’t give a $hit who heard him. God bless his soul.

If case you haven’t noticed, the world is coming apart. America’s freedom and our right to exist is being attacked, our chosen religions are under attack, the dollar is under attack, we are about to enter WW3, food shortages are predicted along with $5.00+ gasoline and you’re getting your panties twisted up over a fellow FReeper posting an article that contained an acronym (SHTF)!

Your grandfather was not conservative if he wanted his sailor language to become the language of our public culture, and would get on the net to push that idea as many here are.

Do some of the people here really not understand the difference between salty private conversation, and us pushing this into the public realm, into out public writings, into labeling our movements with it, formalizing it, pushing it into our homes and into the articles that we push our children to read?

That would be difficult given that he died in the 1980s and if he were alive today, he would be more than 100 years old.

You, sir, know not what you speak of when insulting a man who figured Harvard was getting "too loosey-goosey" in the 1950s and sent his children elsewhere.

He had more on the ball than you ever will.

What would you prefer?
‘excrement hits the oscillating blades’ (EHOB)

The ‘S’ in SHTF doesn’t have to mean what you think it does - get your mind out of the gutter - you could always say “Stuff” for the ‘S’-word.

Try it out

‘when the....Stuff Hits The Fan....’

See, that wasn’t so painful.
When you describe a scenario to others - whether children or those who can’t handle an abrupt word - just say “Stuff”!

WTF?
(remember, that now means - Winning The Future)

And, when the inevitable SHTF- I will hope you remember to shout out... “Stuff!!!”

You claim, or seem to be claiming that your grandfather used cussing in his formal writings for the general public, I would like to see that evidence, maybe in his ship’s logs even.

The end of the Bush presidency gave me extreme foreboding for the future of the country. I had lived on a sailboat for a while in my youth, and I felt it would be a great survival platform. I bought a slightly hurricane damaged 30’ diesel auxiliary cruising sailboat for $4500, and moved aboard immediately. It helped me get through the economic crunch, my only bill was my cellphone when I was at anchor, but there are cheap marinas with water and power hookups for around $250mo. In the southeast, many rivers that lead to hunting and fishing opportunities; my survival plan is to live on the edge of society with an option to “get the hell outta here” if things get ridiculous. Right now I’m trying to prepare as if I’m going for a long cruise after Thanksgiving, meanwhile service the engine and fuel system, put in some extra water capacity, and load it with imperishable food from a dented can thrift store in Jax. Not much of a budget, but I like it on the fringe...lots of boat neighbors doing the same thing, pretty tribal atmosphere.

Since when did a conservative standing up for cultural conservatism become a bad thing?

You like the the success that the left has had on our public vocabulary, in media, and and in the written language?

I am an evangelical Christian and a prepper. I do not use the aforementioned verbiage in my everyday discourse, however I am not a complete puritan prude either. Words have meanings. In addition to Greek and Hebrew Jesus spoke Aramaic, more of a pedestrian language of the day. And don’t forget He chose sailors and tax collectors to hang around with. Our righteousness as filthy rags could more accurately and more up to date be described as “your best ain’t worth shit”.

If I do use such language it is because there are no other words to describe such a horrible thing. (and usually there are better).

When society collapses it will truly appear that the “poop hit the fan” and I don’t really think we will need to be that concerned about what we call it.

Besides, I always thought it was Schumer Hit The Fan...;-

I respect the fact that this is, in some respects, Jim’s house. His rules on language are fine, though a constant trouble to me (my fingers have a large amount of drunken sailor in their make-up!)

TSHTF I remember Dad and Grandad both using, though they said the words instead of using the acronym (how would you even pronounce it?). It has been around an aweful long time.

Sorry, but this is a storm in a teacup. You are a prepper, or at least on a prepper thread, and want everything sweetness and light? Are you going to fail to gut a hog because the large intestines smell of fecal matter?

Almost no one spells out the word, except for you. It is a convenient shorthand, and one that describes the severity of the problem. Not quite TEOTWAWKI, but a level up from widespread rioting.
