The Whispers in the Loggia blog (WITL) has obtained a bishops-only internal briefing that was circulated soon after President Obama’s announcement of his HHS regulation “compromise.”...what follows “is the text of tonight’s internal, bishops-only briefing, obtained by Whispers and signed by the aforementioned quintet: the conference president, Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan of New York, and the bench’s committee chairs for Pro-Life Activities, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston; Doctrine, Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington; Domestic Policy, Bishop Stephen Blaire of Stockton, and the newly-formed arm on Religious Liberty, Bishop William Lori of Bridgeport.” Here is the briefing:

What can be passed by a simple majority through reconciliation can be repealed by a simple majority through reconciliation.

Catholics voted in the majority for Obama in the 2008 election. All over the nation, Catholic parishes are infested with hard core liberals. I know, I used to attend some of those parishes when I was a Catholic (I am now an Evangelical Christian).

The buzz words were "Social Justice!" in these churches. We had 2 priests in a single rectory who died of AIDS within months of each other. Abortion, homosexuality, and sin in general were never discussed from the pulpit - it was all touchy-feely-postmodern-whatever-ism.

I am not saying all Catholics are like this. In fact, they are now a "swing" vote. However, any group that would vote with 54% or so for a man like Barack Obama are not my brothers and sisters in Christ. No way.

By their fruits ye shall know them.

Well, did you hear any atheists say anything at the onset? I didn’t...Of course not! To an atheist it wouldn’t matter so naturally they wouldn’t bring it up. Those who have been given to keys of the Kingdom to ‘bind and loose’ would most likely say something first and rightfully so. Ya think?

The Left rejects the blessings and embraces the curses.

You're absolutely correct. Yes, they do.

No? Neither do I.

Respectfully disagree. Every liberal Catholic I spoke to before last election was quoting the USCCB support of national health care AND voting your “conscience” for the good of Social Justice. Catholic sheeple who are not taking the time to pray, fast, and research followed this feel good tripe. Catholics sold us out.

Exactly! The liberal bishops and priest don’t just have blood on their hands, they are drowning in blood.

I feel the same about any sky pilot who would so cavalierly dismiss my “group”.

Contraception is not a medical service but a means of population control and a way of eliminating the family as the base unit of our social structure.

I could not agree more.

If one considers the modus operandi of the left for example in subverting environmental concerns as a means of choking capitalism, one can see that these maneuvers of indirection have become more and more blatant.

I've asked this before: do you think Catholics HERE AT FR are the ones voting for Obama and supporting leftist policies?

If not, why the constant vitriol aimed at Catholics generally?

Whom are those who are constantly lumping all Catholics together in political thinking trying to influence?

What message are you trying to convey?

It's getting a little unnerving to read these types of threads here, when coming to find people of like mind on this issue, I'm increasingly feeling the opposite.

Obamacare was not passed through reconciliation.

THe House passed the pre-Scott Brown Senate version of the bill without changes because they would not have been able to get it to conference to reconcile with the earlier House bill. Reconciliation was only talked about.

“Any bishop in that position should have tendered his resignation from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops years ago.”

They see things (at least the best of them) sub specie aeternitatis. Apparently you don't. Which is your privilege.

Do you agree with them that there should be open borders and the taxpayers of the U.S. should support anyone who happens to cross it?

If the Catholic Church were true to its own teachings, all these people would be excommunicated IMMEDIATELY!

Not just because they stand AGAINST the clear teachings of the Church, not just because they promote abortion-murder, preemptive abortion, divorce, and homosexuality, not just because they themselves even participate in at least some of these abominations, but because they do so VISIBLY and PROUDLY with NO SHAME!

Obamacare was not passed through reconciliation.

No, not through a joint reconciliation committee between different Senate and House bills but through a Senate rule about budget reconciliation. This was why the Senate was able to pass the bill by a 56-43 simple majority vote. Remember with the election of Scott Brown the Democrats lost their 60 vote super majority and could no longer stop a filibuster.

I don’t know of any bishop — never mind the bishops collectively — that holds that opinion.

It's a good thing they put it in writing then...

Madam Chairman, the U.S. Catholic bishops believe that any comprehensive immigration reform bill should contain the following elements:

• a legalization program (“path to citizenship”) that gives migrant workers and their families an opportunity to earn legal permanent residency and eventual citizenship;

• a new worker visa program that protects the labor rights of both U.S. and foreign workers and gives participants the option to earn permanent residency ; • reform of our family-based immigration system to reduce waiting times for family reunification;

• restoration of due process protections for immigrants, including asylum-seekers; and

• policies that address the root causes of migration, such as the lack of sustainable development in sending nations.

During my testimony, I will attempt to spell out in more detail our recommendations in this regard, as well as point out the policy provisions the USCCB would oppose in any immigration reform bill.
