What do I have to do to erase Windows 7 and install a newly purchased OEM copy of Windows XP Professional?

have you checked the oem website to see if there are W7 divers? BTW is it usb? before you trash W7 get driver easy, and see what it picks up. Another thing to do is to to the device manager and click on show hidden devices. delete any unknown of improperly installed devices and run the scan for new devices. XP pro has a very limited support life left, especially considering W8 is due out 3rd or 4th Q ‘12.

If it's ok with you to wipe out your Windows 7 just do that when you install the XP. There is another way if you create another partition and install a dual boot system. See

http://www.techspot.com/guides/143-dual-boot-windows7/

or many other links you can find by doing an Internet search.

My wife is one of those who are happy with XP and don't want anything to change.

It's pretty ridiculous that a $20K scanner would have to be abandoned due to lack of Windows 7 drivers.

Agreed. You and I both know that someone could write the drivers for that, but the question is - will they be allowed to? Could such a thing be done out in the wild?

It's a problem that I'm thankful I don't have, but certainly there are millions of people around the world being affected by this OS upgrade. Seems that someone could do what's necessary to fix it.

My wife is also on a home built computer using Windows XP. She’s got a laptop with 7 on it, but is perfectly content to keep using the old OS on her desktop. She’s got so much work tied in with the old OS, that she’s more comfortable leaving things the way they are, until such time that she’s forced to upgrade.

Myself, I’m happy with Windows 7. I’ll probably stick with it until someone pries it out of my fingers :-)

I think the manufacturer figures there's no money in maintaining the drivers for the quirks in their less recent models. I wouldn't mind paying for driver upgrades to new operating systems, but apparently that isn't their business model.

This situation is what's known as a business opportunity.

There is actually a cheaper license available for people that repurpose. I’m really not trying to be a smart ass, I have just spent a good deal of time understanding MS licensing. I am not an expert, but I do know the rules for OEM.

MS actually came down on Fry’s a couple of years ago for this. I believe the minimum hardware that you have to purchase to count as a “rebuilt” machine is either a hard drive or memory.

Reread your post... THe hardware was not broken by windows 7, the guy doesn’t like it. And really, I was just posting some information that I know to be correct. You come across like a jerk with your post.

Yes it was. Before Windows 7, his computer drove his color laser printer. Now it doesn't. Therefore, Windows 7 broke it. QED.

Reload the original OEM's 'restore' disk, crapware and all, assuming he can find it or download it?

So every OEM copy of Windows I’ve purchased from Newegg has been illegal?
