Blockbusters, ho! With the American summer sailing ever closer, audiences are bracing themselves for the inevitable onslaught of big-budget features that have made the period so highly anticipated (and feared). Though March releases John Carter and The Hunger Games threatened to kick off proceedings early, they failed; John Carter by not being successful, and The Hunger Games by being significantly smarter than the seasons traditional fare. So welcome aboard Peter Bergs Battleship, a suitably brain-dead and super silly action flick based on a classic but notably plot-free board game. Weather wise, things are cooling down in Australia rather than heating up; still, the Hawaiian-set Battleship sure feels like summer to me.

Saw the previews....and yep, looks like another yawner meant for 12 year old boys.
As for “John Carter”.....saw it; it was a snooze (and I was actually looking forward to seeing it). Seems the screenplay and the director tried to cram too much of a great book into a single movie. It was all over the place, and the viewer (especially if you haven’t read Burrough’s book(s)) is left scratching your head repeatedly (”WTF is that all about???”).
It’s a definite “don’t waste your money”. Sounds like Battleship is in the same sad category.
P.S. I DO love a great “popcorn movie”. “Revenge of the Titans”, mess that it is, fits that category. Check your brain at the door and just enjoy the ride.
One day it will be in the Five dollar bin at Wally World. And on that day I will be there waiting.
I have a feeling that “Battleship” is a turkey. That being said, it might do well at the boxoffice until “The Dark Knight Rises” opens.
For me, the only thing even remotely interesting about “Battleship” is that it has Tadanabou Asano in it, playing a JSDF Naval Commander. He’s a good actor, and that almost might make it worth checking out in a second-run theater, on a matinee.
Other than that, I’ll wait for it on PirateBay.
