Old school dungeon crawler: Legend of Grimrock
Steam ^ | 4/18/2012 | Blackshark

Posted on 04/18/2012 7:29:22 PM PDT by Black_Shark

Hey all you old school gamers,

From posts here and there I have gathered that there are quite a few PC gamers on FR. Seeing as the average age of most FR posters is in the mid 30's to mid 40's, it would make sense that at least some of you "cut your teeth" on old school dungeon crawlers such as Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, etc.

I am here to tell you of a brand new dungeon crawler produced by Almost Human, a finnish studio. It has all the old school feel with modern graphics and was 8.5/10 by IGN and has excellent reviews from other sites as well. I have been enraptured with it the past few days and thought I'd share it with the community.

Oh, they are also releasing extensive modding tools for free to the community! :D

The best part? It's only $14.99.

- Blackshark

P.S. If you don;t use/like steam you can download it from their site www.grimrock.net and click "Buy".

Those were some I played when I was college freshman a bazillion years ago. I was also into MUDs back in the day.

He lost me, too. How do you roll dice and mark up graph paper on a computer?

Good choice of games! I have “The Witcher” sitting ony my hard drive from when I bought it at the $2 sale during christmas but haven’t played it yet. Been too busy with Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Skyrim, and Morrowind.

If you like old school dungeon crawlers, you’ll love Grimrock! Minotaur rogues ftw!

“How do you roll dice and mark up graph paper on a computer?”
Roll 2d10 and consult a table in the DM’s Guide :)

Just another add-on for game haters.

A lot can be learned playing online games. I have an MBA and a PHD in aberrant sociological disorders and I got them both from playing Eve online.

Hmmmm? Grimrock has an automap feature that graphs the maps for you or you choose “old school” and do it by hand and rolling dice? If your referring to DnD rules, it’s done “behind the scenes” so to speak in games like Neverwinter Nights and NWN2.

A couple years back I looked up the value of the original ‘Fiend Folio’ I lost somewhere along the way. I then rolled 2D10 and cried...a lot.

I agree with that. “umadbro” will make me try to jump through my TV and don’t even get me started on the “Leeeeeeeeeerrrroooyyy Jenkins” of the WoW world...

Who thinks that’s funny 4 hours into a raid? Seriously.

I’ve still got mine :) I played 1st Edition AD&D well up until 3rd Edition came out. I’ve looked at the 4th ed books but consider it to be a dumbed down game unworthy of my attention.

Rub it in ;)

Picture this (ah the memories)...

We lived up in the mountains and used to drag all our stuff out to my uncle’s hunting camp and play over the weekend. Well, that and drink ;). One night I grabbed the fire extinguisher and put it under the table while a couple others went to find relief in nature. When they came back I led the hardy adventurers into a cave with a frost dragon...who breathed upon them the breath of CO2...

I still crack up at the results of that night. Lots of jumping and screaming ;)

OMFG!!

I cut my fangs on AD&D 1st edition. Village of Hommlet. Temple of Elemental Evil. Greyhawk!!

We had new-generation gamers when I deployed to Iraq. I perused the latest DM Guide and Monster Manual. Looked like a bad acid trip.

And yes, I remember fondly Bard’s Tale, and Hillsfar, and Ravenloft.

You should have a read through the Forgotten Realms novels and ESPECIALLY the Drizzt DuUrden Dark Elf series.

Truly brings the D&D world to life.

And there are DOZENS of books to read.

BTW TEE was my first D&D module too ;)

I’ve never beaten it. It’s hard to get past the outdated graphics.

It’s currently sitting on my deskshelf collecting dust. :/
