So there actually is an impact crater? I’ve been left with the impression that it, well they, exploded in the atmosphere, from the few news sites and blogs with any information.

Meteor, in the sky. Meteorite, physically hits the ground. Wont know about a Crater or any meteorite material until the fires are put out.
