I was recently contacted with regard to the membership of Woodrow Wilson in the Klan. If he was a member, I'm certainly not hitting the right key word search, or it just isn't true. And there's a lot of books out there that go over Wilson's lauding of 'The Birth of a Nation'(The Clansman). But setting out to find something almost always leads me to something else. For ease of reference, Wikipedia states that the second KKK existed between 19151944. The Birth of a Nation was released in 1915. Wilson screened it in the Whitehouse, and his view of it is very well known: "It is like writing history with Lightning. And my only regret is that it is all so terribly true."
But that's not where this ends. One movie and one presidential hurrah can do a lot to spur a movement, but it needs follow through. Like this article in the Woodland Daily Democrat from March 15th, 1916:
MAY MARSH, ONE OF "THE CLANSMAN" STARS In spite of the fact that more than 200,000 people have witnessed the marvelous reproduction of Thomas Dixon's famous novel, "The Clansman", continued to pack Clune's Auditorium theater. In Los Angeles at almost every performance of its last week there. And in New York and Boston, "The Clansman" has proven to be fully as popular; while from all directions come requests from theatrical managers that they be allowed to play "The Clansman" in their city.
Dealing as it does, with the most important question before the American people today, the race problem, and dealing with it in so delicate a manner as to cause no bitterness, is it so surprising that the American people, always patriotic, should be in sympathy with "The Clansman"?
Portraying as has never been done before, the great work President Lincoln had mapped out for himself; the work he would certainly have brought to a successful and happy conclusion had he lived, "The Clansman" is of great value from every standpoint, but particularly of historical value. Students of history will gain much from it, and be prepared for more, for "The Clansman" is but foretelling the great future of the motion picture. Every great critical event in the world's history can be brought much more forcibly to the student's mind, if portrayed by motion pictures in an intelligent manner.
Tonight and Thursday evening "The Clansman" will appear again at the Strand theater, and if the pioneer of the photo drama meets with such overwhelming success, what about those to follow?
This turns my stomach. As this racist movie was out there poisoning people's minds, the media was right there to help it along. And as this news article makes clear, it wasn't just "racist southerners". That's what modern progressives would have you believe about racism in America. Interestingly enough, both of these lauding articles come out of California. The Berkeley Daily Gazette from May 10th, 1915:(I've copied about half of the article below)
GRIFFITH'S FILM MASTERPIECE 'THE CLANSMAN', AT MACDONOUGH D.W. Griffith's latest achievement, "The Clansman, or the Birth of a Nation," in twelve reels is the attraction at the Macdonough theater for twenty-one days, beginning today with a matinee every day.The film is based on the famous novel by Thomas Dixon Jr., but it deals more broadly on its historical side with the life of the American nation than does the play or book. "The Clansman, or the Birth of a Nation," is declared to be the greatest and most spectacular motion picture ever produced. It cost $500,000 to produce and seven months were consumed in staging it.
"The Clansman" represents the very acme of art and realism in motion pictures. It includes the most spectacular battle ever staged. In the battle scenes are shown 25,000 soldiers in action, including infantry, artillery, and cavalry.
The night battle scenes represent the greatest feat in photography in the history of motion pictures. The burning of the entire city of Atlanta at night is graphically shown in the picture.
The Famous Raids of the Ku Klux Klan, with thousands of these white-hooded riders in action are shown. Lee's surrender to Grant and Sherman's historical march from Atlanta to the sea are also graphically depicted.
The assassination of President Lincoln by Wilkes Booth is one of the principal features. R.A.Walsh, who has the role of Wilkes Booth, repeated the assassination scene twenty-six times before it was done to the satisfaction of Griffith.
The interior of the historical Ford's opera house at Washington, D.C., where the assassination took place, is the most gorgeous theater scene ever put on. It is an exact replica of the playhouse, including stage, orchestra pie, furnishings and all other equipment of the historical playhouse.
Historically and technically, "The Clansman" is declared to be perfect. A well-known professor of history in one of the California colleges worked three months in securing historical data for "The Clansman."
This is no different than what we see today. The colleges, hollywood, and politicians are out there pushing all of this rot, and the media's right there to put a shiny smiling face on it.
The rise of the KKK in 1915 doesn't surprise me one bit.
Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd, Ex-Klansman
by Michelle Malkin (March 8, 2001)
Ex-Klansman Robert Byrd, the senior senator from West Virginia, casually used the phrase "white nigger" twice on national TV this weekend. Enraged civil rights groups organized a protest campaign against Sen. Byrd and demanded that he undergo sensitivity training ... not.
The ex-Klansman, you see, is a Democrat. Democrats can join hate groups and utter the ugliest racial slurs and get away with it because they are Democrats. They belong to the party of racial tolerance and understanding. They're paragons of virtue, and the rest of us are bigoted rubes.
The ex-Klansman showed his true colors when asked by Fox News Sunday morning talk show host Tony Snow about the state of race relations in America. Sen. Byrd warned: "There are white niggers. I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time. I'm going to use that word. We just need to work together to make our country a better country, and I'd just as soon quit talking about it so much."

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
In 1942, 24-year-old Byrd joined the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), whose parades in Matoaka, West Virginia, he had witnessed in his childhood. He was unanimously elected Exalted Cyclops, or leader, of his local chapter.[8]
Byrd, in his autobiography, attributed the beginnings of his political career to this incident, although he lamented that they involved the Klan. According to Byrd, a KKK official told him "You have a talent for leadership, Bob... The country needs young men like you in the leadership of the nation." Byrd recalls that "suddenly lights flashed in my mind! Someone important had recognized my abilities! I was only 23 or 24 years old, and the thought of a political career had never really hit me. But strike me that night, it did."[4] He participated in the KKK during World War II, holding the titles Kleagle (recruiter) and Exalted Cyclops [the top officer in the local Klan unit]. He did not serve in the military during the war, working instead as a welder in a Baltimore, Maryland shipyard, where he helped build warships.[citation needed]
Byrd commented on the 1945 controversy about racially integrating the military. Byrd, when he was 28 years old, wrote to segregationist Senator Theodore Bilbo, of Mississippi, vowing never to serve in such a military:
"Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.[5]"
He had earlier written "I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side".[6][7]

From the Washington Post:
"Byrd said in the Dec. 11, 1945, letter -- which would not become public for 42 more years with the publication of a book on blacks in the military during World War II by author Graham Smith -- that he would never fight in the armed forces "with a Negro by my side." Byrd added that, "Rather I should die a thousand times, and see old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.."..."
"during the general election campaign, Byrd's GOP opponent uncovered a letter Byrd had handwritten to Green, the KKK Imperial Wizard, recommending a friend as a Kleagle and urging promotion of the Klan throughout the country. The letter was dated 1946 -- long after the time Byrd claimed he had lost interest in the Klan. "The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia," Byrd wrote, according to newspaper accounts of that period. Byrd makes no mention of the letter in his new book."

:: The rise of the KKK in 1915 doesn’t surprise me one bit. ::
It is also unsurprising that those same forces are the genesis of “The Klan With A Tan” in the 21st century.
Dingbat article. The Birth of a Nation was a groundbreaking, epic film - innovative in its storytelling and film techniques (for instance, Griffith’s perfecting of cross-cutting). The star is Lillian Gish - one of film’s greatest actresses.
That the movie goes off the rails in its final hour is acknowledged by all film buffs and historians. But that was simply because of Griffith’s strong Southern roots. His father, I believe, fought for the Confederacy and like many southerners, Griffith remained bitter about Reconstruction. The Birth of a Nation was hardly some Hollywood, left-wing conspiracy.
Conservatives need to educate themselves about the arts in order to properly combat the real problems that are - today - embedded in the arts. This article doesn’t cut it.

Although it [The New Black Panther Party] says it sees capitalism as the fundamental problem with the world and revolution as the solution, the new party does not draw its influences from Marxism or Maoism as the original party did. Instead, in a carefully-worded, roundabout form of ethnic nationalism,[8] they say that Marx based his ideology and teachings on indigenous African cultures, and that the NBPP therefore need not look to Marxism or Maoism as a basis for their program, but can look to ideologies that stem directly from those African origins.

"The Justice Department originally brought the case against four armed men who witnesses say derided voters with catcalls of "white devil" and "cracker" and told voters they should prepare to be "ruled by the black man." ..."
One poll watcher called police after he reportedly saw one of the men brandishing a nightstick to threaten voters.
As I walked up, they closed ranks, next to each other, the witness told Fox News at the time. So I walked directly in between them, went inside and found the poll watchers. They said theyd been here for about an hour. And they told us not to come outside because a black man is going to win this election no matter what.
He said the man with a nightstick told him, Were tired of white supremacy, and he starts tapping the nightstick in his hand. At which point I said, OK, were not going to get in a fistfight right here, and I called the police....

Is using the “N” word really all that wrong? Blacks use it, and have plenty of their own racist slang for others. I’m not even sure the KKK’s message is all that wrong anymore, if I am to be discriminated against by the government per Affirmative Action based EEO laws then some things they say are correct.
I’m over it and I will use the N word when it applies and I choose. If the N word bothers anyone, don’t listen to the below video, it’s probably got something to offend most people
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQpmJgZZ2gQ
It’s an anti-racist vid btw.
Where are the truly successful USA Black’s thoughts on AA? I don’t hear anything but demands for more from that side with very few exceptions of people like Sowell or Williams. They’re tainted by it too.
Look deep enough and I think you will find that this 2nd incarnation of the KKK was little different from the Nazis who formed a few years later. A leadership of largely bi/homosexual neopagans that successfully concealed their true selfs from the masses.
Do you think they REALLY want to screw with the Professionals? These c**knockers can't hit a human being at 20 feet, and us guys at the back of the scoring pack at Perry can hit a dinner plate, over iron sights, at 600 YARDS!
That film used to be studied closely in film school as to its structure and storytelling. Everyone knew that the last hour was full of racist mumbo-jumbo but the first two hours about the Civil War were magnificent.
There has always been a desire to suppress BOAN and now I'm wondering if some of our great film schools have taken it out of the syllabus...
First of all, "Black Liberation Theology" is a COMMUNIST-REVOLUTIONARY 'church' movement which uses fake/concocted distortions of existing religions to advance a communist-revolutionary agenda. Second, "Black Liberation" is indeed a very dangerous thing. It isn't only 'reverend' Wright and Obama that embraces it, it is/was also the new and original Black Panthers, the terrorist Weather Underground, terrorist/murderous Black Liberation Army (obviously), the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA --of Patty Hearst fame) as well as many many others in the American communist-revolutionary movement.
"Their founding document [the Weather Underground's] called for the establishment of a "white fighting force" to be allied with the Black Liberation Movement" and other "anti-colonial" movements[1] to achieve "the destruction of US imperialism and the achievement of a classless world: world communism."..."-Berger, Dan (2006). JOSE DIAZ-BALART, TELEMUNDO NETWORK: "Liberation theology in Nicaragua in the mid-1980's was a pro-Sandinista, pro-Marxist, anti-U.S., anti-Catholic Church movement. That's it. No ifs, ands, or buts. His church apparently supported, in the mid-'80s in Nicaragua, groups that supported the Sandinista dictatorships and that were opposed to the Contras whose reason for being was calling for elections. That's all I know. I was there.
I saw the churches in Nicaragua that he spoke of, and the churches were churches that talked about the need for violent revolution and I remember clearly one of the major churches in Managua where the Jesus Christ on the altar was not Jesus Christ, he was a Sandinista soldier, and the priests talked about the corruption of the West, talked about the need for revolution everywhere, and talked about 'the evil empire' which was the United States of America."
REV. BOB SCHENCK, NATIONAL CLERGY COUNCIL: "it's based in Marxism. At the core of his [Wright's] theology is really an anti-Christian understanding of God, and as part of a long history of individuals who actually advocate using violence in overthrowing those they perceive to be oppressing them, even acts of murder have been defended by followers of liberation theology. That's very, very dangerous."
SCHENCK: "I was actually the only person escorted to Dr. Wright. He asked to see me, and I simply welcomed him to Washington, and then I said Dr. Wright, I want to bring you a warning: your embrace of Marxist liberation theology. It is contrary to the Gospel, and you need, sir, to abandon it. And at that he dropped the handshake and made it clear that he was not in the mood to dialogue on that point."

Obama's Church: Gospel of Hate
Kathy Shaidle, FrontPageMag.com
Monday, April 07, 2008
In March of 2007, FOX News host Sean Hannity had engaged Obamas pastor in a heated interview about his Churchs teachings. For many viewers, the ensuing shouting match was their first exposure to "Black Liberation Theology"...
Like the pro-communist Liberation Theology that swept Central America in the 1980s and was repeatedly condemned by Pope John Paul II, Black Liberation Theology combines warmed-over 1960s vintage Marxism with carefully distorted biblical passages. However, in contrast to traditional Marxism, it emphasizes race rather than class. The Christian notion of "salvation" in the afterlife is superseded by "liberation" on earth, courtesy of the establishment of a socialist utopia.

Catholics for Marx [Liberation Theology]
By Fr. Robert Sirico
FrontPageMagazine.com | Thursday, June 03, 2004
In the days when the Superpowers were locked in a Cold War, Latin America seethed with revolution, and millions lived behind an iron curtain, a group of theologians concocted a novel idea within the history of Christianity. They proposed to combine the teachings of Jesus with the teachings of Marx as a way of justifying violent revolution to overthrow the economics of capitalism.
The Gospels were re-rendered not as doctrine impacting on the human soul but rather as windows into the historical dialectic of class struggle. These "liberation theologians" saw every biblical criticism of the rich as a mandate to expropriate the expropriating owners of capital, and every expression of compassion for the poor as a call for an uprising by the proletarian class of peasants and workers.

I'm not a student of film but wasn't Leni Reifenstahl's "Triumph of the Will" also full of technical innovations?
Moving back to the thread subject, when comparing "The Clansman" with BOAN, I don't find much parallelism. The Clansman begins at war's end with the hero in a Union POW hospital, his mother pleading for mercy from Lincoln. From there it goes to the hero's sweethart back home being assaulted and killed by a freed slave. Then some psedoscientist using a microscope peers into the dead woman's eye and sees the image of what she last saw. Naturally, he see's the freed slave assaulting her. From there, an outraged mob forms, dispenses mob justice and restores what they saw as "good and right in the world".
I seem to recall their being only three photographs in the entire book. Curiously, the photo's don't match the storyline and may be what amounted to publicly printable 1900's era butch homoeroticism.
If they actually want a race war, Ayres, his commie wife, the NBPP and millions of others of deluded Democrats of his ilk are going to be part of a landfill. The sad thing is how many actual Americans are going to get caught in the crossfire, just by virtue of race.
However, I don't think Wright, Holder and the rest care. It's not like THEY will ever be in a position to stop a bullet... (I'm also sure Nicolae Ceaușescu never imagined he'd be standing in front of a wall.)
Now consider that Kennedy was killed in 1963, Vietnam and the rise of the counter culture was approx 63 to 72...and we are in 2012
Se we are the same historical distance it time from Kennedy Vietnam and the counter culture as people in 1916 were from Lincoln the civil war and reconstruction
