Looking For A Backup Utility

Posted on 06/13/2012 12:04:50 AM PDT by chaosagent

I'm looking for a backup utility, and so far I haven't found one that will do what I need so I thought I'd come to the font of all knowledge, FR.

I need to back up a single folder to another folder every night at a certain time.

Ideally, the destination folder name would be the date, i.e. 20120613, but really any name is OK as long as it has a different name each night.

Note I don't want anything overwritten. I just want a new copy every night.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for any help.

Recently purchased seagate external drive for parents’ computer. It had software app which was easy to set up for automatic, periodic backup. Might work for your need.

I’ve looked at several different backup programs. So far none of them will do what I need. They all want to overwrite or do an incremental backup.

Thanks.

Cobian Backup 10. Will create full backup of whatever folder(s) you request to any location you request and create a new ZIP folder containing all the files compressed or not with the date in the file name.It does much more as well with a post and pre job processor to customize.

Is it just me, but a 32gig flash thumbdrive backs up most things. Such flash drives are up to 62(?) gigs nowadays. I also have a Maxtor 360gig back up. I really don't get why so many have trouble backing up their data.

Plus I will never use a cloud back up.

Thanks. Cobian looks like it might do the job.

What you need is a simple script that runs automatically every night using your scheduler(?). You didn’t say which OS you are using, for detailed instructions this matters. Scripting in your OS is useful and powerful so it is worth learning about.

As was mentioned before, creating script or DOS batch file will resolve your problem.  Maybe a friend with knowledge in this are will be able to help you out. I found an IT related site where the owner created a batch file you are looking for.  He sells it for $9.95 plus will help in setting up and tailoring it to your needs.  I am not affiliated with the site or owner.

I hope it helps.

Rsync is a good command-line utility for this type of thing.
