Jeeez.... the Russians and Chinese must be pinching themselves. It looks like Cairo is going to fall into their collective orbit without them having to lift a finger.

All Putin has to do is make sure Assad stays on in Syria and he will be the beloved godfather of all dictators everywhere. As for the military gear, yes, the US stuff is nicer than the Russian stuff — but not THAT much nicer, and it’s not like the Egyptians have no experience at all with Russians — or with running a military dictatorship.

The Army in Egypt has been the most favored institution since Nasser. They’ve kept their power and perks intact through Sadat and Mubarak. They are not going to knuckle under to the Islamists now because they have Iran as a clear example of what happens when the fanatics get too much power.

Obama keeps this up he just might end up losing US access to the Suez Canal. And wouldn’t THAT be fun???
