No. Robert E. Lee was all about Virginia. It pained him greatly to refuse command of the Union Army and eventually lead the Confederates. As went Virginia, went Robert E. Lee.

Lee did his duty as he saw fit. I don’t doubt that he could have gotten another command position if he had wanted it.

If Lee was a traitor why was he offered command of the Union Army? He was the best General in the United States and both sides wanted him.

Right up until the Confederacy asked for his services, then he was just fine with leaving the service of Virginia, and serving the pretended confederacy.

He applied for a pardon- indicating that he admitted his wrong.
