Consider the large number of unemployed who "leave the labor force," ie quit looking, every month. Prolonged unemployment, with the consequences for loss of self-respect and loss of supportive relationships as identified above, puts a man at very high risk for clinical depression.

Depression is characterized by lack of energy, loss of interest or motivation, and a sense of hopelessness that things will ever get better. Many of those reported as swelling the disablility ranks are likely basing their claim on prolonged depression.
