Shock Assassination In Narcoland; Son Of Prominent Politician Slain In Border Town

The 25-year-old son of the former head of Mexico's national Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) has been assassinated in the border state of Coahuila as reported by Richard Fausset for the Los Angeles Times: "the body of Jose Eduardo Moreira Rodriguez was discovered by police late Wednesday on a rural road outside of Ciudad Acuña -- across the Rio Grande from the west Texas town of Del Rio -- shortly after he was reported missing."

Moreira was the oldest son of Humberto Moreira, the former governor of Coahuila, who resigned last December as the president of the PRI "after being embroiled in a financial scandal centered on falsified loan requests during his governorship, in which he left the state with more than $3 billion in debts."

The historically corrupt PRI controlled Mexican politics for decades until the election six years ago of President Felipe Calderon from Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) who launched a military campaign against the drug cartels, and last July voters swept President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto and the PRI back into power in an election which some saw as a capitulation to the narcos.

I used to live there and worked in Ciudad Acuna back in the early 80’s. It used to be a fun place to go hang out.

How can anyone possibly be “shocked” by someone getting whacked in Mexico? The place is a narco-state garbage dump. My advice to anyone looking to invest in or escape to somewhere south of the US border is to look towards Belize, Honduras, and (believe it or not) Nicaragua.

Okay, I know that Ortega is a Marxist. But, the truth is that he is a crook first and a Marxist second. Which means he keeps his hands off of the investment scene, as long as he gets his cut. And keep in mind: even presidents for life don’t live forever.

I lived in Saltillo, the capital of Coahuila from 2008 - 2010. Humberto Moreira was like a rock star. People in Coahuila thought he would be the next President of Mexico. I was a neighbor of the minister of finance. What a crook. That guy had his own private jet, a fleet of cars and a team of armed security around his house 24-7. In the summer of 2010, when violence started to move into Saltillo, he moved his family to San Antonio, with the plan that he would join his family after the Governor’s term ended in 2012. My wife was a freind of his wife on Facebook, until she dropped off in 2011.
