I’m debating increasing my pretax contributions to retirement. I know the investments will likely be dropping over the next 4 years, but it should decrease my taxable income. That is if I am not mistaken in my thinking.

But consider that with mister tax and spend more the rate you pay in the future may be higher than the rate you pay now. I'm not saying you should or shouldn't just consider the implications in both directions.
