Prayer Request for Keegan James Dondlinger, born yesterday, due 4 March
Private Communication | 24 November 2012 | El Gato

Posted on 11/24/2012 2:11:23 PM PST by El Gato

I would like to enlist the services of the Prayer Warriors for the grandson of a little girl who lived in my neighborhood when I was growing up. She's obviously not so little now, but is in need of your prayers.

Keegan James Dondlinger was born yesterday, November 23, 2012, but was due March 4, 2013, three days after my own grandson is due. He weighed 1.85 lbs, but he looks very well developed for being so young and so little.

He's been able to open his eyes, and to grasp his mother's finger.

Another update today:

So when we went up to say goodbye to him at noon, the nurse mentioned that they are starting to wean him off his continuous feedings and when they are down to a normal feeding schedule they will begin bottle/breastfeeding him. They started weaning off the CPAP last Saturday and took him off the breathing tube the Saturday before that, so looks like we know what milestone he is going to hit this week. Oh and he has another eye exam Monday or Tuesday so hopefully that will go well too.

Latest information/musings:

Not too much to say. They turned down the shunt a tad because it was draining too much off. More of the genetics test came back negative so the drs and the geneticists are gonna talk bout the next step. Then the dr gonna meet with us some time after that.

It's optimisic versus pessistic at this point either he has something they cant figure out yet or he "normal" and doesn't have anything ...

Thank you all for your continued prayers for Keegan. Here is the latest update: So we had a meeting with the neonatologist where basically he outlined every issue he still has and where we are on the path to fixing that issue...

Genetics: They did a whole battery of tests and they all came back negative. The skeletal survey has to be looked at by a specific doctor who is out of town for a couple weeks... -_-

Head: They adjusted the shunt yesterday and hopefully got it right, may need more adjusting, not to big a deal.
Eyes: Had another eye exam monday and they were looking like the treatment worked and they will re-exam next monday.

Breathing: He is pretty much on the lowest setting of cpap. Doesn’t even have a cpap machine just a tube hooked up to an oxygen tank. Hopefully he goes off it completely in the next few days.

Feeding: They have him down to one-hour feedings once every 3 hours so one on 2 off. When we go back up Friday we will try breast/bottle feeding. This is the one thing that is really unknown since we haven’t really even started it yet.

Going back to Bryan: The neonatologists in UNMC and Bryan both agree that he needs to stay at UNMC until his head and eyes are taken care of because Bryan doesn’t have the proper doctors for those. Also, if he doesn’t take to feeding and needs a tube put in that has to be done in omaha too. So basically, he is most likely staying at UNMC til he comes home since when he is good enough to go to Bryan he will also pretty much be good enough to go home.

You beat me to it again Iris. Which is great. Again, I'll post the picture de jure. It's a GREAT one.

Practicing to put on the feed bag. Preemies have to learn, especially after a long time with a tube. Looks like he's learning quickly.

Just to clarify, Bryan is the hospital where Keegan started out, it's in the same town where they all live. And where I lived. UNMC is the big University Hospital, about 60 miles away, where he was transferred and will remain until he's ready to finally go HOME.

Me too. But I've always been optimistic. Especially once I called in y'all. But now the reasons are more down to earth, and not just "a feeling".
