TV's Dog the Bounty Hunter: $1M reward for Dorner will bring out the pros

Some manhunts can take a few days. Others, years.

With hundreds of officers deployed across Southern California looking out for accused cop-killer Christopher Dorner, there's no telling how long this one might last.

"We've had cases where fugitives have been captured in a day, a week, a month," FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said. "But certainly, there's an urgency here because of the ongoing threat."

Dorner, a former Los Angeles Police Department officer, has targeted cops in a manifesto he issued online as a vendetta for his dismissal from the department. He is accused of killing a Riverside police officer in an ambush and shooting at other officers. He also allegedly murdered the daughter of the former police captain who defended him in department hearings, and her fiance.

"I can't speculate as to how long he'll be on the loose. It's the great unknown," Eimiller added. "These cases vary wildly as far as how they're solved. Some cases, all you need is that one tip, that one phone call."

She said "at any given time there are thousands of fugitives on the loose - many for murder - and law enforcement are working on those cases every day."

Eimiller pointed to the 16-year search for James "Whitey" Bulger, a Boston mob boss who was wanted for 19 murders, money laundering, extortion and drug dealing. At one point Bulger was listed as No. 2 on the FBI's 10 most-wanted list, with a $2 million reward offered. It was a tip from the public after a media campaign by the FBI that led to his arrest in 2011 in a Santa Monica apartment.

Right ahead of Bulger on that list, of course, was Osama bin Laden, who was not found and killed until almost 10 years after the Sept. 11, 2001...

One thing the LAPD should do is see if he bought those pre-packaged food packets. If he’s going to hide for an extensive period of time, he’s going to need a fair bit of food and it’s not that expensive to buy in bulk. For $10 grand, he could buy 3 - 5 years worth of food. Longer, if he has a secure place to keep a garden.

I think the guy might be dead already, by suicide.

His vehicle broke an axle, which was definitely not part of his escape plan.

He's on foot in snow country.

How can he not leave trackable footprints at 300 pounds?

He has to find shelter, and soon, or freeze to death.

There can only be a couple winter trails back down to the warmer valleys, so those are easily blocked off.

All the nearby homes have been searched.

Unless he managed to hijack another car, or hitched a ride with a sympathetic person, he's stuck outside in the snow.

With the name “Dog”, police are more likely to shoot him than Dorner.

Not necessarily. He may have bought a different vehicle, curbside, and towed it out to where he abandoned the truck. Axles can be broken, which would at least delay the time for the police to take it to forensics. A broken axle would also give him time to get away, because they would think he’s on foot, when he could clear across the country.

Also, with a simple change of clothes such as a plaid shirt and baseball cap, and he would be fairly unrecognizable to 90% of the population.

He’s shown himself to be highly intelligent, and with his naval training and police background, he can lay low for years on end, especially with some proper planning, like buying some rural property and stocking up on necessary supplies.

He can literally, for a number of years, keep himself isolated and choose his other targets at will. Also, assuming he’s still in the Los Angeles area, as a former cop, he would also know a number of unused and empty buildings to hide in.

Cops know how to break into houses. They have to be able to break in to find people who are sick/dying/can’t pick up the phone. I have seen them do it, they can break into a window without damaging it within a couple of minutes, usually under 90 seconds.

For sure Dorner knows: the area,
how to tell if a home is occupied;
how to break into a home.

And probably, Dorner knows how to tell if a house has a basement, and how to live in such basement unnoticed.

He would need to run the risk of living in occupied homes. He’s only have to cheque the real estate listings for unoccupied homes.

In a second report they say the tow truck may have broken the axle. I can’t believe he’s be hiding in the mountains pretty sure that was just a distraction as was the wallet and badge in San Diego. He’s had 4 years to prepare for this he’s most like got a place to stay another vehicle or several, cash in several places as well as weapons. I don’t see them catching him anytime soon, and I only see dead badies if any so called bounty hunters try to take him. Theres somebody he trusts somebody he’ll talk to thats who I’d be looking for.

If you assume he’s been planning this, he could save upwards of 30 or 40 grand per year. If he has a very minimalist lifestyle that, upwards of 100 grand or something, could keep him going for 15 years easily enough and that is not counting and any other preparation.

The police in LA are so incompetent, that they cannot do the job they are overpaid to do.
So far, they have shot up two pickup trucks that do not even come close to the description of Dorner's (not even the same color!), and three innocent people were nearly murdered in the process.
Two of them, sweet little old ladies delivering newspapers, that look nothing like Dorner.

Now these incompetent buffoons, fools and idiot want to use drones against him. Great.
What could go wrong?

He has been upset since 2008, a smart man can plan a lot of options in that amount of time. Look how long Bin Laden eluded the best of the best.

Course, a million $$$ bounty can limit your options and cause massive changes in the best of plans. He has already accomplished some of his objectives, the LAPD is hunkered down and shooting at shadows.
