Its an entertaining show but its a bit of a stretch to call it history. Still good enough for watching.

Name me any show that isn't a bit of a stretch to call history. Does this show have some historical inaccuracies? Yes, but they've also showed some fairly accurate historical data as well (I was impressed with the monks actually speaking Middle English, with modern English subtitles)...

The main character is loosely based on a Viking named Ragnal. It looks like the producers used the Norse sagas for character development so historical accuracy may suffer a bit. The little blond son Bjorn is probably going to turn out to be Bjorn Ironside who will out strip his father Ragnar in deeds of raiding and plundering even raiding into the Mediterranean and plundering the south of France and the Italian coast.

In episode 3 when Ragnars wife Lagertha goes along on a raid Ragnar puts his priest captive in charge. Before Lagertha leaves she cautions the priest if anything happens she will rip the lungs from his body. She is referring to the rite of the Blood-Eagle.

I’m waiting for the series of episodes that will depict the Vikings heading west to Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland and into the North American Midwest.

The series creators have talked about future seasons covering people like Leif Erikson, Eirik the Red etc.

Personally I would like to see Harald Haardraade :)

They will have totally ignored St. Brendan The Navigator’s discovery of North America in the 5th century AD.

Its an entertaining show but its a bit of a stretch to call it history.

Actually, there was a guy named ragnar who did become king, many of the things in the show are historical. wikipedia ragnar and read , its kind of cool.

PS: the wife, the "shield maiden", she actually existed and was a ferocious warrior just like on the show

no kidding, that guy has to go down.

in history, ragnar becomes king, so guessing that is the way it will happen

yes, the rite of the blood eagle. gruesome. but reading up on it, some doubt that it actually existed, or was dreamed up by the vikings terrorized victims.

when you read it, doesnt seem medically possible.

I also have heard that it was anti-viking propaganda written up by priests to make the vikings more demonic and fearsome than they were. Being as the priests and churches were a favorite target of the vikings and the priests were some of the only ones who could read and write that is possible. Control the media, control the message( sound familiar?).

The only thing is there are some references in Norse sagas and Skaldic poetry. I believe it is medically possible albeit quickly fatal due to blood loss or shock.

well, great episode. and that little rat that was the asistant of the earl got killed.

the brother got cut up, but i guess he is alive.

as far as the snake pit goes, that apparently is accurate, and eventually that is where Ragnar ends his days.

great episode

I like this show as well.. Since I’m 1/4 Brit (as far I know I could be more) I could have some Norse ancestry as well.. But who knows...
