As I recall, they handed out “pink” sugar cubes. I went to Kindergarten and First Grade in Elmont / Valley Stream.

I’m not even sure if my Parents were told I was being given the Vaccine at School.

I think I was just given a shot. An amazing part of baby boomers childhoods. Terrible tales of iron lungs. I had a friend who was never vaccinated and she ended up with the dread disease. She survived quite well but her legs were absolutely ruined.

The “pink sugar cubes” was the oral Sabin vaccine. The Salk vaccine is the injected version.

I was in a transitional group who received 2 doses of Salk, and then a dose of Sabin (it was in a little plastic vial with a sweet liquid in it).
