The deployment is, more than anything, symbolic. It means Russia will no longer take US military build up in the region on the sidelines. Because while the Mediterranean build up is inevitable (and can be tracked here), the next step will be the arrival of Russian air and land-based support in Syria. Oh, and China. Let's not forget China. The ship, Moskva, will take over operations from a naval unit in the region that Moscow says is needed to protect national interests. It will be joined by a destroyer from Russia's Baltic Fleet and a frigate from the Black Sea Fleet. "The Cruiser Moskva is heading to the Gibraltar Straits. In approximately 10 days it will enter the east Mediterranean, where it will take over as the flagship of the naval task force," the source said.

Slava-class cruiser is built around the the P-500 Bazalt missile, which is a liquid fueled supersonic missile with a 550 km range and a payload of 1,000 kg, which allows it to carry a 350 kt nuclear or a 950 kg semi-armor-piercing high explosive warhead. It was designed to keep a carrier at the 550 km distance.
We have had no carriers in the Mediterranean since the Nimitz sailed past Gibraltar on August 3. Now the Moscova has moved in, making the neighborhood pretty crowded.
My Advice is stop worrying and learn to love the bomb. Obama and congress are about to start WW3. Over what? Saving face?

No one has considered that Syria’s Air Defense systems were supplied by Russia, and probably manned by Russians. What will happen when we start killing Russians??
