...Most of us think in terms of Nature vs. Nurture. We have genetic traits that give us something to work with, and the environment we live in shapes us.

Scott Jurek adds a dimension: he’s an agent in his own life. His will is equal to or greater than the other forces, and the success he’s achieved, the records he’s set, the boundaries he’s pushed, have been all him.

Would love to meet him. He comes across as incredibly humble and generous. He’s also seems quite an intellectual. I read two pages of his book and have to go for a long run.

Nice review. I enjoyed it. I will probably end up getting that book through a “real” bookstore just because that’s what I usually do, but I still checked the Amazon links and read some other reviews. If I get it online I will go through your site.

I have always loved what you also pointed out in your comment about us humans, who some suppose are outmatched at all levels by animal counterparts:

“I think the only animal that could do it faster is a bird.”

“Scott could have delivered mail faster than the Pony Express. That’s not something cute to say. He can run a hundred miles faster than a horse.”

(Add in a bicycle and the right terrain, and we are even more impressive!)

Anyway, I needed some inspiration today!

Thanks for writing and posting.

(And also a big thank you to our well meaning and ever vigilant thread police, for today’s forbearance, as I LIKE reading the original publications of longstanding Freepers, whether it gets them “hits” on their “blogs” or not!)

No need to buy through the link on my site. Though I have an Amazon affiliate relationship, I haven’t bothered to make the links that would credit me for sales. Suppose I ought to.

Trust me about that book! Some of the stuff he grinds his way through is simply amazing—as if running a hundred miles isn’t. It’d be a spoiler to say more, but he overcomes a lot along the way.

Another fantastic read, if Jurek’s book is enjoyable to you, is Born to Run, by Chris McDougal. Its billed as a book about running for non runners. It features Jurek, among others, and is also great read.
