I was told that all of the symbols printed on US currency originated with the Masons.

My daughter went on a conspiracy kick over the “Illuminati” a few years ago, and I wonder if people don’t see the Free-Masons as part of the same thing.

My dad was one. I’m not. I don’t know what to think about them, though it would be nice to have a secret symbol for getting say, a free lunch or a last minute pardon on the gallows.

Yes, and freemasonry does represent a serious departure from Christian belief. It is a bit of cognitive dissonance for me to think of the founders in that light. I think some, perhaps most, were members on the edges, not insiders actively working against the Gospel, just not well informed. Southern Baptists frequently have such ties, and they are good people, but members of freemasons out of tradition, or sometimes professional necessity, without ever having considered the spiritual conflict such dual membership represents.
