a beginning student once answered the usual question as to why any interest in Russian thus: "My grandparents were communists, my parents are comunists, I'm a communist, and I want to be able to read Marx in the original language!" Poor student. He didn't that Marx wrote in German.

It would be like naming a child "Bob" instead of "Robert" or "Billy" instead of "William," or "Larry" instead of "Lawrence." Exactly. But this is still not so grass as naming a female baby "Nikita" after the Elton John's song.

Actually it's a diminutive of Aleksander or Aleksandra. In Russia you'll find both boys and girls being called Sasha. You beat me to it ... "Sasha" is usually a nickname for "Aleksandr," a boy's name.
A common nickname for a girl named "Natasha" is "Nastya." But I can see why the Obamas didn't pick that one.
