Actually it's a diminutive of Aleksander or Aleksandra. In Russia you'll find both boys and girls being called Sasha.

You beat me to it ... "Sasha" is usually a nickname for "Aleksandr," a boy's name.

A common nickname for a girl named "Natasha" is "Nastya." But I can see why the Obamas didn't pick that one.
