The two companies are cooperating on engineering and design to the point of sharing basic platforms, suspensions, possibly even engines if I'm not mistaken, so go with the best deal you get on either one. Korean cars have come a long way in the world, and have a great warranty. No concerns over either one that I'm aware. That new Kia Cadenza is a fine looking sedan, by the way. Not in your son's price range but very nice. Kia has a nice turbo four that runs on regular gas, too. Not sure if Hyundai does.

To my knowledge, all the Hyundais run just fine on regular. I’ve driven most of them including the R-Spec Genesis. Turbo is no different so far as I know. I believe the engines are identical to both companies. Probably transmissions too. It comes down to taste in my opinion.

This may be helpful.
