The Jewish Universalists lost faith in G-d, but they did not lose faith in humanity. There is a name for people who think that way. They're called (proudly, I might add) "Humanists."

My only success with these idealists has been in convicting them of their sinful state. They cannot abide the notion they are not ethically blessed.
The human condition does not allow this kind of delusion. The conviction of sin is the beginning of wisdom.
