Yeah - I hear you. After the ‘80’s I got so turned off by the formulaic proliferation - just get a cute face to sing about Jesus and all is good.

I’ve paid attention again in the past 5 years - my faith restored with groups like Casting Crowns, Mercy Me.

If you haven’t, check out a few other bands like Leeland, The Glorious Unseen and Hillsong United.

There was a thread that touched on this earlier today. Back in the day a guy once told me that the PDs for contemporary Christian radio used to judge songs on ‘JPMs.’ That’s ‘Jesus per minute’ as in how many times the word ‘Jesus’ is used in a minute. Songs with high JPMs got more airplay because they needed to let their audience know as soon as possible that it’s the place on the dial they are looking for. Supposedly the music was so bad that unless you had high JMPs everyone would just flip past. So the acts played along, and started writing songs that had maximum JPMs, and of course the songs suffered for it.
