The After Effects Of Michigan's Minimum Wage Increase
Michigan Capitol Confidential ^ | 6/24/2014 | Manny Lopez

Despite overwhelming evidence from economists on both sides of the political aisle, Republicans in leadership positions in the Michigan Legislature pushed for an increase to the state's minimum wage.

They were rewarded for their efforts when Republican Gov. Rick Snyder signed the increase into law late last month.

By 2018, employers across the state will be forced to pay at least $9.25 an hour to workers. Forced increases to the minimum wage will continue in 2019 and beyond because the wage will be adjusted to the rate of inflation or 3.5 percent, whichever is lower.

The mandate will be phased in over the next four years. As has proven to be the case with other arbitrary increases, the people who the increase is intended to help most will suffer worst.

Others problems will occur, as well. Local economies will suffer. Mom and pop businesses will struggle. Training opportunities will wane for some workers and minorities will lose opportunities to enter and advance in the workforce. Those are the conclusions of eight economists who have studied minimum wage increases. They shared their thoughts with the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. Watch their videos here.

A higher minimum wage is great for Wal-mart. Their customer base will have more money to spend at the only place they can afford to shop. And it more than makes up for the increased cost of labor for them.

That’s why a 3 bedroom house costs almost half a million dollars over there.

I was really torn over this issue to raise the minimum wage. However, when I think about how Congress abuses the taxpayers money, gives billions to other countries, my tax dollars go to support the takers in society (generational welfare), our President and other leaders are allowing/and or looking away from hundreds of thousands of illegals from other countries who will suck more taxpayer money out of this country, I have no problem with raising minimum wage.

When I started work at 16, minimum wage was like 2.00 hour. I worked my way up to a really good job in medical field some 40 years later (without a degree).

We have the price of food, gas, utilities going nothing but up. A roast now costs 20.00!!. Yes things like gas, food, housing were cheaper back in my day then today and my salary was lower then today -in comparison to salary there wasn’t a huge SPREAD of expenses vs. assets like it is now....

I have heard the same ‘scare’ that employers won’t hire if the minimum wage is raised for last years. During those years, we did have a great, booming economy with some not so great years as well. Unemployment percentages were low over many years during minimum wage increases...

America needs to do tariffs on other countries products coming into this country; other countries rape us literally.

I am just tired of waste-full spending, leaders who don’t care about middle class, send billions overseas and Congress critters who blow 168 thousand dollars on steak dinners (ie: Cantor)...

employers will hire especially if they can easily pass the price onto the consumer....so the restaurant chains and fast food places will keep up....

however, don't expect me to tip anymore....one tipped the young people because you knew they didn't make a lot of money....but now, since they are going to make about what a newle graduated social worker would make, they can forget it....

and the funny thing is, they'll make more money which means MORE TAXES and some of them will loose their Earned income racket and some of them will never get any free tips either....

No tipping goes for me too, I am ok with that. When I was making 2.00/hr, that was passed onto consumer goods too. No getting around passing it around.

Yep, higher income, more taxes, lose that precious earned income tax racket and probably lose their food stamps as well...just 1.00 over the income limit get cost you that freebie...
