Becoming Alert to Conservative Protestant Sexual Abusers and Their Enablers
patheos ^ | Daniel Fincke

Posted on 07/01/2014 7:51:24 AM PDT by Morgana

Last night I listened to the new Reasonable Doubts podcast, which included a detailed account of the case of self-righteously Christian former major league baseball player and eventual sex abuse convict, Chad Curtis. The show is a gripping and revolting listen, and as usual the Doubtcasters bring to bear a lot of insight in the process both of telling the story and in analyzing it at the end. Doubtcaster Jeremy Beahan went to college at Cornerstone University where Chad Curtis was a prominent figure, earning his degree to go into high school coaching (where he would commit his sex crimes). Before even dealing with the Curtis case, they also critically analyze evangelical Christians’ warped and potentially destructive tendencies to pathologize masturbation as a matter of addiction. Please listen here. The official description of the episode is below:

I will not make the usual "If they could only marry" joke.

I learned some information yesterday that chilled me to the bone and will say this to all FReepers, sex perverts are in all churches. Parents don't be freaking stupid.

And nobody wants to talk about the decades of hiding sex abusers in the Public School systems.

“Years of investigating abuse cases—“we spend our days swimming in Christian cesspools,” he says—has left him hypervigilant. Megachurches with thousands of volunteers unnerve him, and after working on too many cases where girls were molested by someone in their best friend’s family, Tchividjian and his wife no longer let their daughters spend the night at friends’ houses, let alone church camps or “lock-in” church-basement sleepovers. “

Mega church ping worthy? Or just good common sense?

My comment is more about the lack of media attention to sex abuse in Public School systems, and the shuffling of known abusers.

They would like us to believe the problem is isolated to one Church.

Lack of media? Seems like every time I come here or on Drudge I see where another teacher has got busted. It makes headlines.

Most seem not to want to report a pastor and put him in jail. A teacher is busted every time

It isn’t a Protestant or Catholic thing.
It’s the culture that does not guard or protect it’s children.
Send them off to schools who encourage immorality.
Throw modesty out the window.
Send them off to play sports and engage in fun activities that treat boys and girls as one sex.
Saturate the culture with pornography and every evil thing...
The list goes on and on. Children become prey to every evil inclination of the adults around them.

Indeed. At least the churches protecting themselves only do volunteered counseling and confession, not this NSA protect public school crap.

sex perverts are in all churches

I remember the great protestant witch hunt of the 1980s which is why I won't join in on the Catholic bashing over every allegation.

For those who don't remember, hundreds were accused and only a handful were convicted. Whole congregations lost their children. It all collapsed when it was proved that psychologists involved were coaching kids on what to say in their testimony.

You hit upon it with the second one...

“It’s the culture that does not guard or protect it’s children.”

In comment 1 I had already said “It’s in all churches” which is why it’s now on the parents to get a clue. Parents must guard or protect their children.

What was not in the “Not in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s......!!!” ?????

Dude sex abuse, even child molesters has always been around!!

When Kinsey did his “scientific experiments” that was in the 1940’s! Kinsey found child molesters even then. Only difference was he really had to search them out.

Today they are oozing out everywhere like Ebola.

I hate to tell you this but yes children were sexually abused at school and at churches in the “ 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s” just not to the level they are today.

I can tell you this. It has gotten worse since 1950 and you know why? Thank you slime of the Earth Dr Alfred Kinsey!

My great grandmother told me a story from the early 1900s about how the local menfolk dealt with a drifter who “hurt” children as she put it.

They took him on a midnight tour of the steel mill and he was never seen in the area again.

The elephant in the room is the pervasive sexual culture here in the USA.

It is not surprising at all that abuse would also be found within all Christian schools and churches. In fact, it is all around us, and for some odd reason, our culture seems to be backing away from God and any moral guides that have guided our ancestors in the past. We will rue the day that we have eliminated references to God in our schools.

Could it be that evil does exist? Is Satan for real? Is there such at thing as sin? Can promiscuity actually be bad for you? Yes to all these things.

May God have mercy upon us all.

...clinical psychologist Anna Salter [wrote] in her book Predators: Pedophiles, Rapists, And Other Sex Offenders: “Church people”—always looking to see the best in people, to welcome converts, to save sinful souls—are “easy to fool.”

...Christians’ openness can allow abuse to go unchecked: Perpetrators tend to use scripture to coerce, justify, and silence. If they’re clergy, they will exploit their positions; if they’re laypeople, they will take advantage of a church hungry for volunteers and rely on the trust given to members of a church family. “The reason why offenders get away with what they do is because we have too many cultures of silence... When something does surface, all too often the church leadership quiets it down. Because they’re concerned about reputation: ‘This could harm the name of Jesus, so let’s just take care of it internally.’

Sexual perverts are opportunistic, and this country has given them carte blanche to multiply and spread.
