It essentially mirrors the Muslim practice of “temporary wives”.

It should be noted this practice is largely, though not entirely, limited to Shia Islam. Quite rare among Sunnis, at least in formal terms with a preset date of termination of the marriage.

BTW, what up with this stuff about polygamy being "rare" among Jews?

Being monogamous and a Gentile, I wouldn't have a clue one way or another.

My guess is that he's probably talking about contemporary Jews, to the exclusion of Old Testament kings.
