I get the feeling they ride this out as long as possible to extract as much $$$ as possible. Same with everything else in our legal system that drags out for years even decades like death penalty cases. It’s all about reaming over the taxpayers as much as possible.
Also could be that since the system is based on getting people to plead out, they wanted to make an example of this guy as warning to others.
