Plenty of airlines knew the risk and used alternate routes prior to the event. furthermore, all flight paths below 32,000 feet were closed because they thought that would keep planes out of reach of errant SAMs that they knew about. They were wrong clearly, not I. And so again I say, in retrosepct, flying over war zone with active air defense systems was obviously a bad idea.
