They were formative in the early history of the Navy and Marines. They attacked US shipping and enslaved and sold US citizens, including raping women. When asked by Jefferson why they were attacking us their reply was “our religion commands it”. This caused President Jefferson to eventually (only after failed negotiations) send warships and Marines to Tripoli. Thus came the Marine saber and a verse in the Marine hymn.
