When they tried it, the troops reinforced the threatened flank.
Anything that would have effectively swept the streets of looters and rioters would have gotten howls of protest. Big deal.
If I were running things in Ferguson, I would have used one of two options:
1. Seal off the town and only let people who can prove they live or work there to get in. All others can go home and burn down their own neighborhoods.
2. Completely withdraw all police and let those who think that the police are the problem experience what it’s like when the “community” is in charge.
I have no sympathy for those who were not there making assumptions based upon race and acting upon them with violence.

And at the 6 minute mark they start practicing with Molotov cocktails and flames.
Yea, the training seems apt as the crowd did various assaults in a rather robotic matter. Figured it was a training scenario.
I wonder if they purposely let the phalanx crack once just to get the officers used to chaos.
The comments in the extended version claim that this is a training exercise, but I am skeptical that it would include actual firebombs being thrown.
Regardless, I think that each Governor [not the Fed gov’t ] should have squads available that are specifically trained and equipped to deal with riots with the object of minimizing injury and property damage for all. The tactics shown in that video seem a lot more effective than how mob violence is currently being handled in this country. There is no right to loot, burn and maim because you’re upset that a violent sociopath had to be put down like the rabid dog he was.
Given recent history, it is clear that just about every time a person born into a Designated Victim demographic is shot by the police — no matter how evil and guilty he was — there will be riots and looting guaranteed. These need to be smothered immediately; otherwise it will not be safe for law-abiding citizens to go anywhere. And allowing riots to go on for days and weeks risks a race-war being touched off when their intended targets start fighting back.
It is better for civil order that the authorities handle this, but everyone is entitled to their own self-defense. There is only so much that the victims of racially motivated assault [and their friends/family] are going to take. As we have seen in Gaza, it’s not a ‘crisis’ until the victims finally retaliate.
