What has America done for the music tradition of Western Civilization?
WesternCulture

Or sooner; What has the US done to the music tradition of Western Civilization?

There are plenty of Americans who understand and appreciate great composers like Beethoven, Vivaldi, Albinoni, Bach and Mozart, but something must be wrong with a nation that year after year produces crap like the music of 50 Cent, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.

I'm European and I admit we make a lot of worthless music too, but at least we Europeans are fostered in the great tradition of composers like the giants mentioned above.

I agree. Most music produced in this country before 1990 was pretty good.

Without “Video Killed the Radio Star” MTV would never have gotten off the ground.

The prototypical American symphonic composer is Aaron Copland. If you are not familiar with him, don’t post crap like this from your insular Scandanavian view.

He’s comparing apples to oranges. He takes European classical music and compares it to American pop music. He should try comparing European classical music to American classical music or else European pop music to American pop music.

But he’s probably too ignorant to know about any of the American classical composers.

Stupid thread. Let’s compare Hemingway with J.K. Rowling while we’re at it.

Every era produces giants. It will be a long time before the world sees a heavy Metal vocalist like Ronnie Dio. This one really showcased Geezer Butler as well.

Rock N Roll was attributed to Chuck Berry (Maybellene), but he adapted Bob Will’s tune (1938) “Ida Red”...so actually Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys invented Rock N Rock.

i think the problem is that western civilization peaked before 1914, and western music along with it.

it’s at the high art level that standards have fallen the most.

almost all recently composed classical music or opera is just awful, and also forgettable.

in terms of popular entertainment, it’s not obvious to me that country music is that much better or worse than 19 century european folk music.

i exclude rap and heavy metal from the discussion, because, in my view, art has to be made by humans

every country i go to, especially Europe only American music is played. Its usually the crap referred to above.

I was in a grocery store in mestre italy a few months ago and while I was shopping and little old ladys were getting their bread they were doing it to Lil Jon unedited. I could tell there was one other person how spoke English in the store because we both looked up at the speakers and said “Really”??

When Europe was fostering the great composers, America was still being settled.
