I guess I may be a dolt also because while I would not be likely to panic, I would almost certainly go on high alert and make sure he didn’t successfully get within “HATCHET’S REACH” of me.

Judging from your comment, I’m guessing that you, on the other hand, may have assumed he was Amish and engaged in peaceful and thoughtful discussion with him.
